Chile officially appealed for international aid today as the country's President Michelle Bachelet imposed a dusk to dawn curfew in the two provinces closest to the epicentre of Saturday's earthquake and tsunami and the death toll rose to over 700 people.
The army was sent in overnight to help the overwhelmed police force to deal with looters in Chiles second city, Concepcion, which was 70km from the epicentre of the quake.

Quark: Let me tell you something about Hew-mons, Nephew. They're a wonderful, friendly people, as long as their bellies are full and their holosuites are working. But take away their creature comforts, deprive them of food, sleep, sonic showers, put their lives in jeopardy over an extended period of time and those same friendly, intelligent, wonderful people... will become as nasty and as violent as the most bloodthirsty Klingon. You don't believe me? Look at those faces. Look in their eyes.

At some point it becomes a matter of survival. They will do what they have to do. We, in this country, have never had to do that so we, in general, don’t understand it.

Maybe it’s just me, but I need Heineken to survive.

Isn’t Heineken in bottles, one of the essential, basic food groups?

The problem is that even after Katrina there are many that believe that this can not happen here.
Should a quake of the same magnitude happen on the New Madrid Fault can one eve imagine the chaos that would ensue, not just in the quake zone either, but as a result of the country's infrastructure being torn in half.

It was ironic to me to see a reporter this morning talking about the looting and how it has become a matter of survival, while in the background of the looters were going by with TVs, refrigerators and microwaves.
Is a TV best fried or boiled?

Yep, it can happen ANYWHERE. It is plain human nature to do anything to survive. Basic survival is first: Water, Shelter, Food. You can survive weeks without food, but 3 days without water. Along the basic needs to survive is a .45 hand gun or equivalent high capacity pistol for self defense. Be ready to use it.

"The problem is that even after Katrina there are many that believe that this can not happen here." I believe it can happen, but I generally believe it will only happen in the densely populated metropolitan areas.
The Mississippi gulf coast was much more badly damaged that NO, and yet - even with the Casinos being vulnerable, we didn't see any widespread looting, just a handful of isolated incidents. Thomas Jefferson suspected that the large metro areas would be a problem for the Republic moving forward. It's too bad he's not around to see how prescient he was.

the problem really is that black people depend on white libs for help, while white libs depend on white conservatives to supply the obama stash......... we our broke

Why go to all that trouble? Just set out a bottle or two of Heineken and wait for him to show up! ;-)
