Taliban Blown Up By Own Bombs
The Sun ^ | 26 Feb 2010 | DAVID WILLETTS

TALIBAN killers have blown themselves up laying booby-trap bombs, we can reveal.

Up to 20 are thought to have died planting Improvised Explosive Devices.

They were racing to plant the IEDs before the Allied offensive Operation Moshtarak. The triggers on the IEDs have become so sensitive the terrorists are accidentally detonating them as they hide them.

Last night a highly-placed source said: "The Taliban know only too well how effective the IED has proved to be.

"It is designed to take out our lads at even the slightest touch but this has backfired on Taliban blown up by the sophistication of their bombs.

"We have evidence a significant number of Taliban have been killed in this way.

"The IED does not discriminate. It wreaks carnage."

So ... why isn't it standard practice to air-burst a bomb over an area so the shockwave will trigger any IEDs if they are so sensitive ? Or .. in oil & gas exploration, they use "thumpers" to create seismic waves they they then use to map the ground structures. It seems like those would be strong enough to trip IEDs or maybe even landmines. All from a safe distance. So why haven't I read any of this happening ?

“TALIBAN killers have blown themselves up laying booby-trap bombs”

I’ve heard that the British army refers to that as an “own goal”.

In my experience because countermeasures are countered when advertised / revealed / detected or publicized ........no ones business but those involved in the render safe or detection of such threats.

Stay safe !

Probably because they are severely limiting air support, unfortunately, to limit casualties. Bad ROE’s over there. Better to kill them while they plant it but they’re not allowed. Have to radio for legal permission for every shot unless they are fired upon. Looks like God is intervening personally. Hoorah!

A vibroseis truck was my first thought too, but the airburst bomb would work also.

Something from another thread about the Brits in Helmand province:

"To this end commanders made effective use of military helicopters – which the Government has finally deployed in sufficient numbers – to land a combined force of British and Afghan troops behind the Taliban lines, thereby avoiding the rows of IEDs (improvised explosive devices) that the Taliban had laid like a conventional mine field."

Yes, but I’m curious if they attempted to set off any easily tripped IEDs before they land. If these devices are sensitive enough to be tripped by accident when they are being planted, then they probably are setup that sensitive so they’ll be tripped by APCs rolling past.

An airburst bomb strong enough to trip them but not strong enough to actually hurt any civilians in the area seems like a cheap, simple, and safe tactic.

It appears from PBS video that they are using DTMF tx/rx IED`s, e.g., “D”, to trigger the IED`s from up to 300 feet away- all NATO needs is an all-band DTMF code sprayer with 300 meter tx range.

It might break someones china, and violate ROE?

And these will be a problem for years to come. I have often wondered why a giant machine could not be built, a “continent crusher” type of thing, large enough to go through a forest, and which would have treads large enough to set of a whole field to IED and mines, etc. Just thinking.

It could be that sometimes this would not be done in the interest of secrecy.
