The Lower Merion School District, embroiled in lawsuits over laptop cameras and redistricting, faces the possibility of a substantial tax increase for next school year. The current budget contained the largest tax-rate percentage increase in the region. --snip-- Lower Merion was tops in the region in per-student spending in 2008-09, at $21,663; the Philadelphia School District ranked 60th, at $11,426

The tax hike is a good idea. They’re going to need the money to pay the lawyers and then to pay their losses for peeping Toms watching teenage girls (and guys?). The only idea better than a tax hike would have been hiring people with decent values who wouldn’t abuse the equipment and the kids.
Over $21K per student???!!!
ping
It’s a proven fact that the more money that’s spent, the better the education. That’s why no one ever learned to read or write in any of those primitive one-room schoolhouses, the kids had no awareness of social issues and diversity, and they had terrible self-esteem.
If Pa. would let school districts replace teachers when their contracts end (i.e. end the right to strike) school taxes would stop rising like this.
it costs a lot to spy on the kids. Perverts.
Not surprised ping...
And I haven’t heard of any parents getting together and demanding an end to this program.
Those idiot parents deserve what they get.
That’s the problem with employees on the state payroll. The taxpayer gets screwed when they mess up. In the end, the school will end up paying a fortune in lawsuits and lawyer fees, but nobody will lose their job or personally have to pay a dime.

Truest statement I've seen them utter yet. LM is edumacating the District, County, State, Nation, and World! Biggest 'bang-for-the-buck' in history!! </sarc>
Thanks for the pings.
Anyone ever wonder if company owned laptops are being used the same way? Does your boss know if you are searching the web for new job leads, or anything weird?
I am sure there are programs to log your key stokes and web logs. I do know IF a employer would do that but they certainly could.
Certainly something to think about.
I had to stop reading right there to burst out laughing. Right across the bridge here in NJ, the average property tax is more than $7,000 for a property assessed at far less than a Lower Merion property. There are wealthy townships here in NJ that are similar to LM, and homeowners there pay around $20,000/year in property taxes.
"After five years of exorbitant real estate tax increases, the taxpayers deserved a break;"
Any tax increase should be fought. But, a $243 tax hike is nothing in comparison. Ours shot up by more than $700 one year.
Lower Merion is SO wealthy. And there's nothing wrong with wealth. More power to 'em. But, other articles say the LM school district received state funding (some say federal, too) for those laptops. How is it that one of the wealthiest school districts around is able to qualify for state funding so that each student can have a laptop, when the property taxes there are so low and spending per pupil is already so high? That's as big a story as the spying, imho.
I agree - one of the first comments I ever made on this story was the fact that this wealthy district was handing out laptops to kids who most likely already had them...of course now we can assume they had an agenda.
Here’s a good laugh for you
Tax value on my house $369k
Property Taxes $1,800
Actually, I’m not laughing, anymore. I’m crying. :-(
