Dem leaders vow to move forward on healthcare -- with or without GOP
The Hill ^ | 2/25/10 | Michael O'Brien

Democratic leaders vowed to press ahead with healthcare reform after a 7.5 hour summit at the White House.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) praised President Barack Obama for the marathon sessions, but said they would act on the Democratic proposals discussed Thursday -- with or without Republican support.

"Every Republican used the same talking points," Reid said in a brief press availability at the White House following the summit. "Time is of the essence. The American people waited five decades for this, and we are going to do this."

"The fact is that we're going to move forward," Pelosi said, adding that Democrats didn't have the option to pass up on the opportunity to move healthcare legislation, only to let the "process" stop them.

The process to which Pelosi referred is the budget reconciliation maneuver, a tactic Democrats are considering using in order to pass a health bill in the Senate with a simple majority, rather than the 60 votes usually needed to end a filibuster.

Obama defended that process on Thursday, saying that Americans wanted an up-or-down vote on the healthcare proposals before Congress.

As for bipartisan cooperation, Pelosi said they welcome GOP ideas and may incorporate them, but that she's skeptical that any compromises would win Republican votes.

"I'm hopeful that something may come of it," she said. "I'm not overly optimistic that we may get Republican votes for the bill."

It is against the Constitution to force “me or any US Citizen” to purchase a product, like n0bamaCARE. I will send out my letters tomorrow to all the “Fools of Congress”, that wish to push this reconciliation process.

Now is the time for all TeaPartyFolks to really push this Constituion Idea and quick before n0bama and the “loony left” seize control.

Fight FR’s, Fight. Now is not the time to rest. Come on TeaParty folks, fight against this government takeover.

Thanks for the rant. RedShawk.

James Clyburn, the House Majority Whip from SC and “summit” attendee, said after the meeting that he DOES NOT and WILL NOT have the votes to pass the Senate bill in the House unless there are changes to it. This mirrors Eric Cantor’s statement the other day that Pelosi does not have the votes to pass the Senate bill.

Exactly!

They keep yapping about a Reconciliation Bill, when they know they can't get the Senate Bill through the House unchanged.

This Bill is dead.

I think that one of the strategies of the dums today was to may the GOP blink. They didn’t. Now the dums are vowing to move forward on a bill that does not have the dum votes in the House to pass.

I think this may be turning out to be a MAJOR backfire on the dums.

Matz said. “We took them at their word, and I can’t believe that a co-pay increase like this was allowed to go forward,”

If you are telling the truth, then you are pretty stupid.

So TCFL increase will start Oct 1, 2010? Right now TCFL cost zero for me and my wife since I'm retired and I am her sponsor. Also, Express Scripts which is the TC pharmacy part allows us to get RXs from $3 to no higher than $22 by in network pharmacies or mail order with no premium. TCFL also pays my Medicare deductible as well as my wife's. The only thing we have to pay is the Medicare premium for part B which is deducted from our Social Security income.

So effective Oct 1, 2010 my cost for TCFL will jump from zero to $2,888/year for me and $2,888/year for wife or cost close to $6000. I haven't seen the numbers that will come out of our Express Scripts yet. Will be lucky if ES is still in business when all this hits the fans.

And the One says it will only be a tiny increase?

There are so many portions of the bill that could be challenged on constitutional grounds that it will go nowhere even if the Rats push it through.

A whole 7.5 hours is a marathon session? Have they never worked a full day before?

Yes, they sure do a lot of talking!

It is killing them that the Bill will only have Democrat fingerprints on it, just like Clinton's tax hike did in 94.

My mom told me I was born here. I'd better check my birth certificate.

Of course we're going to tax the hell out of them for a few years before we actually give them anything...

I think, too, Reid and pelosi want the republicns to filabuster then they can blame the republicans and the democrats will not have to vote up or down.

I say let them go, it will be a blood bath in november.

Precisely, however they plan to spend the money collected on something else in the meantime.
