Whale that killed its trainer won't be isolated

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Trainers will continue to work with a killer whale that grabbed one of their colleagues and dragged her underwater, killing her, but SeaWorld said Thursday it is reviewing its procedures.

People lined up to get into the Orlando park a day after the whale named Tilikum killed veteran trainer Dawn Brancheau as a horrified audience watched.

Tilikum had been involved in two previous deaths, including a Canadian trainer dragged under water by him and two others whales in 1991.

How about offering a free “Swim with the Orca!” day at Sea World for all registered members of PETA?

Perhaps they ought to return this Orca to the wild. It obviously is not reliably people-friendly.

I contend she was getting much too chummy for her own good.

Prayers for her.

"What IS a killer whale? It kills people or mammals? I mean, all fish kill other fish, so in that description they’d all be killers. Not being sarcastic, really what IS a killer whale"

Because of their ferocity, and the fact they are strictly meat eaters. They can kill anything they chose to, even whales that are much larger than themselves. They often hunt in groups and there is no other sea creature that doesn't fear them. They're also known to kill and then not eat their kill.

From an internet Orca site:
"To the native Haida tribes of coastal British Columbia the animal is called skana, which translates to "killer demon; supernatural power." To the Aleut of Kodiak Island, Alaska it is polossatik, "the feared one."

"Ranking behind sperm whales, they are the world’s second largest carnivorous animal."

LOVE it!!!

The Orca should either be released or turned over to Star-Kist.

Those who don’t remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

Why any trainer would get near that whale is beyond me.

There should be manslaughter charges against SeaWorld.

They kill wild bears for much less, so I think there is a double standard here. The only mitigating fact is that you can say that Tilly is contained and only trainers who are knowingly putting themselves in harms way are at risk.

Still, I hope someone grows some brains and decides against more 'business as usual.' I've not run across any other fatalities with the other 50+ killer whales in captivity, so having 3 associated with a single specimen really should be a clue. Just because most dogs are man's best friend doesn't mean you give a pit bull pardon after pardon after it attacks and kills someone. Seems to me human life is what is being devalued here.

Put it down or get out of the pool!

They are called "Killer Whales" for a reason!

The local cops are also in the tank for Sea World, saying that the trainer either slipped or fell into the pool, ignoring the eyewitness report.

The whale’s lawyer, Mark Geragos, is en route to Florida and will issue a statement on behalf of Tillie shortly after his arrival.

A killer whale with a rap sheet. WOW

Remember the oil spill in Alaska? The animal groupies cleaned up the seals and then had a party and released one into the sound. Three jumps and it was eaten by a killer whale.
