Baradar to Afghanistan? Not so fast
Long War Journal -Threat Matrix ^ | February 24, 2010 4:40 PM | Bill Roggio

Rehman Malik, Pakistan's Interior Minister, quickly backed away from reports by an Afghan official that Pakistan will turn over Mullah Baradar, Mullah Omar's deputy, to the Afghan government. From CNN:

However, Pakistan's Interior Minister Rehman Malik told CNN there is no agreement to hand over Baradar as part of a prisoner swap and Afghanistan has not made a formal request for Baradar to be extradited.

"No such agreement has been reached between the two governments and no formal request has been received for the handing over of Mullah Baradar by the Pakistani government," he said.

"A prisoner swap was discussed but the Afghan Taliban we arrested are not prisoners. They have been detained and are being interrogated. We are examining if they've committed any crimes in Pakistan. Once they've gone through the legal scrutiny in Pakistan then we will consider any requests by the Afghan government to hand them over."

It is ironic that the person who assured us last October that "the fact is, the Quetta shura does not exist" now has to discuss the possibility of turning over the leader of said shura to Afghanistan.

FBI Director cut the deal last night to send Baradar to Bagram for questioning. Here is the first picture in the West of Baradar at the Karachi Police HQ:

Not sure which of those to believe...but from JAWA:

Pakistan to Turn Over Taliban to Afghanistan?

************************

February 25, 2010

Hmmm, is this big news showing a trend that the Pakistanis now realize that there is no important distinction between Afghan and Pakistani Taliban and therefore it is in their own interests to start playing ball?

Or is this just a one time deal for PR purposes under pressure from FBI director Mueller? After which the Pakistanis go back to playing their dangerous game of only fighting those Taliban which are a threat to their own country while ignoring (or, sometimes even helping) those Taliban which are a threat to neighboring Afghanistan?

Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, a member of the Taliban's high leadership council, and the other prisoners are "accused of criminal acts" in Afghanistan and will be extradited, according to a statement from the office of Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

Baradar and other Afghan militants will be extradited under a prisoner exchange agreement that is still being hammered out by both countries, according to Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik and an Afghan interior ministry spokesman.

Malik, who met with his Afghan counterpart and FBI director Robert Mueller on Wednesday, told reporters after that meeting that a treaty on the exchange would be completed in coming days, and that both nations were comparing prisoner lists and setting up a committee to oversee the process.

Keep an eye on this one people.

Thanks to link thingy.

Well, good thing they found ‘em after all these years.

All parties are jockeying for position based on the prospect of a US Withdrawal by 2011, as stated by Obama.

The Indians have agreed to talks with Pakistan under US pressure, (hopefully an exericise in futility) and the Pakistanis curry favor by turning over some jihadis whose presence may not fit their current goals in Afghanistan, ie. ensuring that strictly ProPakistan jihadis sit at the table with America and NATO.

More smoke and mirrors essentially.

The Lashkaris who with the help of the Army ran amuck in Bombay just had a gathering of thousands where they promised more attacks.

Pakistan makes Kremlinology look simple.

Until the place blows up, if ever, I’m sticking to imbibing beer and listening to music.

Worse than waiting for Godot. Pakistan is simply amazing in their manipulations and survival skills.

Oh, heck, Ernest, it’s Pakistan.

Even Bush couldn’t get access to Omar Sheikh or have the US interview him. And he got nailed for Pearl’s killing. Thrown in gaol. Or protective custody, lol!

That’s why I take most of the stuff coming out of those two countries with a grain of salt until it is verified.
