Poll: More than half of Hispanics identify as conservative [TxGov]
Dallas Morning News ^ | 2-23-2010 | ROBERT T. GARRETT

Regardless, Gov. Rick Perry has fared relatively well, perhaps because of his anti-Washington rhetoric and his careful immigration stance, a recent poll indicates.

It shows more than half of Texas Hispanics call themselves conservative, and a surprising 23 percent say they might participate in Tuesday's GOP primary. Among those, Perry leads Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison by 2 to 1, according to the poll, commissioned by an Austin consultant for a national group of Hispanic legislative leaders...

Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, D-San Antonio, said the poll hints at a little-noticed facet of Perry's political persona: He doesn't frighten Hispanics because he often visits their communities, and he distances himself from immigration hard-liners in the GOP.

"He thought the border wall was a little ridiculous and didn't think it was going to help,"... "What he wanted to keep out were those people that are smuggling drugs and people."

...But she said many Hispanics remember that Perry signed a 2001 bill that let illegal immigrants pay in-state tuition at public colleges. He has defended the bill, saying affected students have studied hard in Texas schools and will be good citizens. ...

The poll found that only 18 percent of Texas Hispanics say they're liberal or progressive, while 54 percent say they're conservative, moderate conservative or religiously conservative.

But Camarillo said many Hispanics who identify themselves as conservative aren't talking about "less taxes, less government," the way white conservatives would.

"When a Latino says that he or she is conservative, they're thinking about how they are raising the kids and ... the family," she said. "It's more about work ethic, and that when you give your word, you give your word. ...

The Republican strategy on immigration should be based on the core principles of the party, i.e.,
national security,
limited government,
the rule of law and the Constitution,
and individual responsibility.

Amen

Why do you take a copyright protected insigna from a website and photoshop it with spam to make it look like the owners are backing Medina? Do you agree with stealing from others?

GOP primaries should be closed to GOP only...we have to change this before 2012 or will get another RINO in the first few primaries again

Agreed, but I don't see that happening as long as the GOP machinery is owned and operated by political opportunists from local districts all the way to the heads of the RNC/GOP more concerned with retaining power thru pandering than applying conservatism thru action. It's gonna take a whole lot of Tea partying at all levels over several election cycles to effectively break the chain of charades that gets played during primaries.

Nope, not any of the ones you named.... Just wondering why a supposedly conservative would steal the labor of someone else and act like it’s the correct thing to do. Medina is toast so why take a copyrighted insignia and photoshop it? Again do I ask but you seem to not want to answer, “do you enjoy stealing from others””? I take it that you do since that is what you’ve apparently done and don’t deny it.

Does seem low but then the primaries in general in nonpresidetial years are much lower. The GOP in Texas hasn’t surpassed 700,000 voters in a governor primary. For some reason people just don’t seem motivated enough to vote.

Interestingly enough, the same is true of many blue collar white Catholics in the northeast and upper midwest, who may call themselves "conservatives" but still vote left as they believe in a "caring" government that looks after "their interests." Small government constitutionalism is largely a white protestant cause, unfortunately.

“This can’t be emphasized strongly enough. It’s a do or die situation. If we surrender the Hispanic vote to the left, we lose the country forever. There is no other option.”

If the “Hispanic vote” requires an amnesty and open borders, the country is lost forever.

What is your deal?

What part of being against ALL immigration legal and illegal do you not understand, I have been against it for 45 years, I am far to the right of you on immigration so what is this weird posting to me with you trying to make me more liberal on immigration, I AM AGAINST ALL OF IT AND HAVE BEEN SINCE THE 1965 IMMIGRATION ACT, I EVEN AM AGAINST SO CALLED LEGAL IMMIGRATION.

Do not try to move me to your softer immigration views.

I do want to show socially conservative Hispanics that are now citizens that the GOP is the proper party, not the homosexual agenda, pro abortion, anti family, soft on crime, anti gun, pro drug, weak on defense, high taxes, pro immigration, Democrats.

I have rarely seen a poster try and change the subject more than you. I don’t care about what you learned in recent years about immigration, I have been walking the walk since the 1960s.

PS did I already point out that you are an idiot that is spamming someone that WANTS TO END ALL IMMIGRATION TODAY! AND TO MAKE IT RETROACTIVE?

You are a lying idiot that isn’t bright enough to look at some one’s posting history or even their posts to you. I am very much against Medina but seeing you go days refusing to post your source for that La Raza claim makes you a terrible embarrassment to freerepublic and Texas.

We don’t just choose sides and then get on freerepublic to post what ever lies we can about a topic.

If can’t post your source then don’t lie.

Do you have a source for your claims or not?

LOL. Create a phony strawman and then attack it. Of course, that is not the subject of this thread or the point I was making.

I do want to show socially conservative Hispanics that are now citizens that the GOP is the proper party, not the homosexual agenda, pro abortion, anti family, soft on crime, anti gun, pro drug, weak on defense, high taxes, pro immigration, Democrats.

You are on a fool's errand. You can use the same approach to cultivate the black vote. The reality is that the Hispanic vote goes overwhelmingly to the Dems and with their rapid population growth fueled by higher birth rates [including 50% out of wedlock] and immigration your efforts would be better spent trying to get more of the non-Hispanic white vote. If McCain had won 60% of the white vote like Bush did instead of 55%, he would be President today.

I have rarely seen a poster try and change the subject more than you. I don’t care about what you learned in recent years about immigration, I have been walking the walk since the 1960s.

I am 67 years old. Your arrogance is only exceeded by your ignorance.

PS did I already point out that you are an idiot that is spamming someone that WANTS TO END ALL IMMIGRATION TODAY! AND TO MAKE IT RETROACTIVE?

YOU ARE AN IDIOT. HOW DO YOU EXPECT TO ACCOMPLISH THAT? Get real.

That is all you have done all day, you went off into the ozone on something that had nothing to do with me or my subject, I'm talking politics and you wanted to share all the new things that you have learned about the immigration problems.

I said that I have been walking the walk on immigration since the 1960s, not that I was older than you, you do see the difference don't you? I was also correct, you are to the left of me on immigration. End all immigration, evidently you support bringing in more than a million foreigners a year into our crowded, shattered communities, I don't, we filled up about 1970 as far as I'm concerned, and frankly I wouldn't mind going back much farther.

By the way Protestant Hispanics voted for Bush at 56% in 2004, white women only voted 55% Republican that year. You cannot compare a group (pros. hispanics) that is close to 50/50 Republican voters with blacks, but you can win them to a more consistent support of social conservatism and free enterprise. I'm also interested in figuring out a way to win 40% of the Jewish vote and 20 or 25% of the black vote and increasing the female support for conservatism too.

You can't be that dense. Immigration affects our electoral politics. It has changed the demographics of our country since the 1965 Immigration Act. I provided you with Professor Gimpel's recent study on how immigration has changed the electoral politics in America's 50 largest counties.

I said that I have been walking the walk on immigration since the 1960s, not that I was older than you, you do see the difference don't you? I was also correct, you are to the left of me on immigration. I am a immigration activist who lobbies on the Hill and in Richmond. We are currently trying to pass an e-verify law in VA. I spend full time on the issue without pay. All you do is talk about the issue. I am doing something about it. One of major problems in the GOP is that there are misguided people like you who believe that we can make a significant dent in the pro-Democrat Hispanic vote. It isn't going to happen. We are building another permanent underclass that is poorly educated, has high out of wedlock birth rates, and is very dependent upon government welfare payments. Our efforts are better spent at reducing the flow of immigration rather than trying to play identity politics.

Re the idea that I support bringing in 1 million legal immigrants a year is pure nonsense. Stop pulling this stuff out of your butt. You must have a reading comprehension problem.

By the way Protestant Hispanics voted for Bush at 56% in 2004, white women only voted 55% Republican that year. The problem with your flawed theory is that most of the minority groups don't vote on social conservative issues. They vote based on their pocketbooks and what the government can provide them. We have 60 million people on Medicaid in this country. 36 million Americans are on food stamps. You are laboring under the phony assumption that if Hispanics and other minorities just understood what the GOP stood for, they would stop voting for the Dems. It is not going to happen. And we continue to replenish Dem voters with our immigration policies that bring in 1.2 million LEGAL IMMIGRANTS a year, 87% of whom are minorities as classified by the USG. Immigrants and minorities vote Democrat. Demography is destiny.

What is idiotic about your posts is that you just keep blazing ahead with an entirely different topic as though I am arguing with you about it.

Hey Idiot, I am against all immigration, legal and illegal, I am not defending immigration, get it?

Hey Idiot, I have been against all immigration legal and illegal since the 1965 Immigration act passed 45 years ago! Get it?

I wasn’t pro immigration or even indifferent to immigration 10 years ago or 20 years ago or 30 years ago or 40 years ago, I have been against all immigration for 45 years and I was taking a strong financial stand against illegals 45 years ago.

Not only do you seem to be some kind of nut that can’t read my posts, you also sound kind of Johnny come lately to the issue, whereas I was there for 45 years.

In the meantime you have totally wasted my time since you just want to post a bunch of information about immigration to me rather than about the thread topic and my interest in it, why not pick out someone that is soft on immigration or pro immigration to spam with your stuff, why pick the most anti immigration guy on the thread and then pretend that he is arguing with you about immigration laws and effects, are you whacked out?
