Ex-Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R) stayed atop the conservative mind with a radio show on the biggest conservative talk station in Phoenix. But the show is proving a treasure trove of oppo research for his rival, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ).
McCain's camp is taking a new angle on Hayworth, accusing him of being a birther for comments Hayworth made during his radio career. In a new clip, from July '09, Hayworth says "questions continue" about Obama's birth certificate.
"Equal justice under law: Doesn't that include this president and his birth certificate?" Hayworth asked on the July 15 show, according to a recording the McCain campaign is sending to reporters.
"Mr. Hayworth can run from his record, but he can't hide," McCain spokesperson Brian Rogers said of the clip. "We welcome Mr. Hayworth attempting to shift positions on this issue, but he can't obscure his real record as he backtracks. Facts are stubborn things, JD."
McCain has been running radio ads critical of Hayworth's record on spending, an indication, Hayworth told Hotline OnCall, that McCain is in "panic" mode. McCain has also distributed talking points on Hayworth's record to friendly GOPers in AZ, another sign he's taking Hayworth's challenge seriously.
Hayworth's team dismisses the controversy over his birther comments, attributing them to a need to stir up controversy on the radio.

WHo the hell is advising you, JD?
Johnny going negative. Imagine that.
McCain hit JD harder than he hits Dems. Jerk
Maybe it’s ok to be negative as long as it’s another Republican he’s sliming.
JD backtracking is a bad sign though.
Yea, lets hear John say Hayworth would make a fine Senator.
But .... there are questions about the birth certificate considering The president won’t release it. That is a fact and doesn’t make one a ‘birther” because they want to see the certificate. Hell... I want to see college records too.
If you got nothing to hide , then release them.
McQueeg went negative a month before JD got into the race.
“questions continue” about the birth certificate is a 100% true observation. That doesn’t make someone a “birther”.
Why is even questioning 0bamao’s birth status off limits, and why is McLame defending him? A modern day “The Emperor Has No Clothes” - everyone knows, but all refuse to acknowledge.
Nothing McCain does or says is relevant to me. I held my nose and voted for him, and that is the last time I ever want to hear about this particular member of the Keating Five.
I like this guy.
When you keep large swaths of your history secret, people (obvously not big media) will attempt to fill them in for you. Whose fault is that other then Barry’s?
What?
Simply commenting on something in the news, which is what people in talk radio do, doesn’t make someone a “birther”. This is actually a very weak attack for anyone with a brain.
That was July. Yesterday he said he believes Obama is legit.
McCain campaign is shooting itself in the foot going for this angle in the Republican primary.
I recall the polls showing that most Republicans harbor doubts about Zero’s birth situation (as opposed to Dems and Independents).
This strategy might be useful by a Democrat in a general election, but the Republican base is quite aware of Zero’s stonewalling on his long form birth certificate and his other background records, and it is McCain that is going to seem out of touch in the Republican primary.
I hope your’re correct.
It sure seems that way.
