Canadian Premier: 'My heart, my choice,' Williams says, defending decision for U.S. heart surgery

An unapologetic Danny Williams says he was aware his trip to the United States for heart surgery earlier this month would spark outcry, but he concluded his personal health trumped any public fallout over the controversial decision.

In an interview with The Canadian Press, Williams said he went to Miami to have a "minimally invasive" surgery for an ailment first detected nearly a year ago, based on the advice of his doctors.

"This was my heart, my choice and my health," Williams said late Monday from his condominium in Sarasota, Fla.

"I did not sign away my right to get the best possible health care for myself when I entered politics."

Hmmm... was that the same World Health Organization (WHO) that provided that “expert opinion” on the H1N1 flu pandemic that was going to kill about a bazillion people in just a short period of time?

Preposterous ranking.

If you believe it, go to Dominica for your health care from now on.

What exactly is the criteria for this alleged “ranking” of countries? Looking at the list, it seems kindof bogus.

Who decides these rankings? What are the criteria?

It’s at the link and it’s an old ranking, too... from 2000. As far as the data that went into it, you would have to look at the source material, I guess... I can’t tell you much about that...

But, you know..., I would invite anyone to present some rankings that are given at any source (that you or anyone else has) and look at their source data, too. So, there’s nothing wrong with supplying anything you may have, too...

It’s at the link and as I was saying in another post, please do provide any other source you have for rankings, too... and the source data. The more data the better, I would think... :-)

Newfoundland is Canada’s poorest province. Its citizens gets taxed to the hilt to pay for Canada’s socialist health care. This bozo makes enough money to opt for treatment in Florida while most of the people he lords over cannot afford to. Because they are overtaxed

He could have gotten the treatment in Canada but via a more invasive procedure. To get the exact procedure he wanted he ran like a rat to Miami

You were saying ...

Hmmm... was that the same World Health Organization (WHO) that provided that “expert opinion” on the H1N1 flu pandemic that was going to kill about a bazillion people in just a short period of time?

I don't know what the actual source of the data is. I would imagine that it comes from a large variety of sources, actually, since it involves all those countries listed and I'm sure they don't have all uniform sources of data. So, anything on that large of a scale, evaluating data from any countries is going to be a difficult task.

But, as I said before, please do give the rankings for the various countries in the world, from whatever data source you have. The more data that can be looked at, the better to evaluate it all. I look forward to getting some of that data from you, too.

Now.., as far as the H1N1 Pandemic, that just follows certain "criteria" that some flu infection follows in the world. If it meets the criteria, it's a "pandemic" -- and that's not too hard to understand.

As I see it, from what they had in the past, the last flu pandemic was several decades ago. And furthemore, as I read the data on flu pandemics in general, in the world, I see that there are about three (on the average) per century, and this fit right into that average, too.

So, there's nothing out of the ordinary for the H1N1 flu pandemic that I can see. It was the first flu pandemic that we've had in the world since the last one that was rated so, the Hong Kong flu pandemic (that I remember, too, from back then).

As far as the infection rates for this flu pandemic as compared to the death rates, you don't always predict how high the death rates are going to be, until after you see it happening. It was already seen what the infection rates were and how they infected the middle portion of the age graph, where it normally didn't happen, so that was similar to the 1918 flu pandemic which was the worst one in medical human history (from the information that I've looked at). So, in that respect, seeing the infection rates very high, seeing that it was infecting those with good immune systems at a higher rate than the normal seasonal flu and not knowing what the death rates were going to be (ahead of time, until after it happened), it was very appropriate to take extreme caution with this H1N1 flu pandemic.

I don't see the problem with the reporting of it, and also, considering that it was exactly within the average time frame of a major world-wide outbreak for another flu pandemic.

There's also an H1N1 flu pandemic thread that Freepers have been following in regards to this latest flu pandemic in the world. I would have to go and look it up, if you're interested in the information that other FReepers have on it...

Comrades!" he cried. "You do not imagine, I hope, that we pigs are doing this in a spirit of selfishness and privelege? Many of us actually dislike milk and apples. I dislike them myself. Our sole object in taking these things is to preserve our health. Milk and apples (this has been proved by Science, comrades) contain substances absolutely necessary to the well-being of a pig. We pigs are brainworkers. The whole management and organization of this farm depend on us. Day and night we are watching over your welfare. It is for your sake that we drink that milk and eat those apples. Do you know what would happen if we pigs failed in our duty? Jones would come back! Yes, Jones would come back! Surely, comrades," cried Squealer almost pleadingly, skipping from side to side and whisking his tail, "surely there is no one among you who wants to see Jones come back?"

Where are the smug Canadians telling us how superior their healthcare system is compared to ours?

I had one in the Cath lab, last week, where I got some of the best care in the world, since I am 71 year old, I doubted that would have been available to me in Canada (or here, very soon, for that matter).

She was mad at the Canuk, said they have the best health care in the world, for free in Cananda, considered the Minister a traitor. She didn't explain why she was working here, instead of there.

You were saying ...

All Canadian pigs are equal, but some hypocritical leftist pigs are more equal than others... What a shameless Marxist!

Ummmm..., I don't engage in Canadian politics, but in looking this up, I see that he's in the party that is on the right, not the left... LOL....

Progressive Conservative Party of Newfoundland and Labrador

The Progressive Conservative Party of Newfoundland and Labrador is a centre-right political party in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

For political parties there, it doesn't get any more "right".... :-)

Nice spamming from the WHO from 10 years ago, I’ve seen health care in Greece (number 14), they call ambulances there “meat wagons” for a reason. I lived there for 3 years. Try again.

WORTH REPEATING...
"This was my heart, my choice and my health," Williams said late Monday from his condominium in Sarasota, Fla.

"I did not sign away my right to get the best possible health care for myself when I entered politics."...........

"I wanted to get in, get out fast, get back to work in a short period of time," the premier said.
Hmmmmm...yet with the proposed US Obamacare we will have to wait...

Williams said he didn't announce his departure south of the border because he didn't want to create "a media gong show," but added that criticism would've followed him had he chose to have surgery in Canada.

"I would've been criticized if I had stayed in Canada and had been perceived as jumping a line or a wait list. ... I accept that. That's public life," he said.
Hmmmmmyet with US Obamacarer..the 'death panels" will effectively make you wait...

"(But) this is not a unique phenomenon to me. This is something that happens with lots of families throughout this country, so I make no apologies for that."
Hmmmmm...yet we are told that Canada, Cuba, europe etc hall possess such wonderful health care for all...BUT he states so many of his Canadian countrymen are making the same decision to opt for the present US heathcare...

With the US rated at 37 and Cuba at 39, inquiring minds would like to know just how the data was compiled, and what weighting various factors were given in determining the ranking, and what sort of data manipulation has been done.

A point is often made about how expensive health care is in America. Any one know what part of that expense is because Americans have quicker access to health care, and don’t die while waiting for expensive procedures?

How is the cost of providing care for illegal aliens factored into the US data? Does the inclusion of that expense artificially inflate the dollars per person reported?

The report notes that the American people are overweight. This does raise the cost of medical care, but that is not as much an indictment of the system of medicine, as it is of lifestyle.

It is an indictment of the inactivity, and typical diet of the American Consumer. (Most people do not go to the doctor and say help me I gained 5 lbs this year).

After 15 years, they look in the mirror, and wonder what happened. The doctor may have been telling such a person that they needed to loose weight, but it is ultimately up to the individual to do it.

Even the morbidly obese can loose weight by eating healthy and exercising, as the Biggest Loser has shown. The existence of overweight Americans does not prove that our system of medicine is poor.

These rankings are highly dependent on who is writing the rules and selecting the criteria. For example, I could say the criteria is the biggest system, the best surgeons, the most MRI machines per capita, and I could go on and on and the USA would be number 1 or very high in all of them. If you make the criteria stuff like percent of people with health insurance, or ratio of health care dollars to defense dollars per capita, then the USA falls well down.
