Anytime the Left says something that sounds reasonable we can rest assured there is an ulterior motive, as you guys say. We also know the TEA PARTY is not a political party at all. Instead is a movement, a political uprising, and the name is a symbol for the uprising of the colonists.
The media, including some who are mildly conservative, don’t seem to understand that distinction. However, the media and the rest of the Left are trying to present it as a political party in hopes of it becoming one. That would split the conservatives and assure a win for the Democrats.
Challenging someone to speak for them is part of that effort.

Clinton Plotting Tea Party Counterattack
Big Government has learned that Clintonistas are plotting a “push/pull” strategy. This is a veiled recon mission. They are looking for conservative targets to attack. They are the ones that have spouting about transparency and having none.....ya we should trust them? NOT!

This would be why the Tea Party refuses to centralize under one umbrella. To do so would make it an easy target. Even if leads to some confusion sometimes or missed opportunities in elections better that then aid the liberals in their search and destroy mission.
