School Mixer Canceled Over 'Freak' Dancing

BRIGHTON, Mich. -- Administrators at Brighton High School said they’re trying to stop a style of dancing they consider obscene on school grounds and recently canceled a popular winter event to make their point.

Officials were concerned students would engage in “freaking" or sexually suggestive movements on the dance floor.

The school required anyone interested in attending the Feb. 6 Winterfest dance to sign a contract beforehand, Detroit television station WDIV reported.

Only 62 students signed up for the dance and that’s why it was canceled.

I’m glad the rest boycotted. Maybe they have learned a lesson for later in life...don’t settle for BS you disagree with.

“Dirty Dancing” was set in the ‘60s. How much more “suggestive” can dancing be with your clothes on.

In ‘62 my HS banned any “fast” dancing. All we had was slow songs, ballads, all night long.

They were so misguided. What they actually accomplished was to have the students “touching” each other very closely.

Many cheerleaders did not graduate........they were too pregnant.

Men and women dancing together has always been about sexual expression. Look at TV today, or movies, or music. To expect teens to dance today the way they did 50 years ago doesn’t make sense to me.

I remember back in 1962 when the TWIST was banned at the teen dances at the National Guard Armory at Carlsbad, NM!

And I recently saw an old Harold Lloyd movie from about 1922 in which there was a sign at the dance hall, “NO SHIMMY DANCING!”
