ORLANDO, Fla. -- An instructor teaching a concealed weapons safety class accidentally shot one of his participants in Orlando.

The class was being held at the Summit Church on Herndon Avenue, but the church was not sponsoring the class. The class was a NRA Concealed Weapons Safety Course.

Orlando police say Michael Phillips was teaching the class, when his gun accidentally went off, and shot Robert Frauman, Junior.

Frauman was shot in the foot. He was taken to the hospital, and is expected to recover.

The 4 rules of gun safety

The 1st Law of Gun Safety - The Gun Is Always Loaded!

The 2nd Law of Gun Safety - Never Point A Gun At Something You’re Not Prepared To Destroy!

The 3rd Law of Gun Safety - Always Be Sure Of Your Target And What Is Behind It!

The 4th Law of Gun Safety - Keep Your Finger Off The Trigger Until Your Sights Are On The Target!

I Didn’t Know The Gun Was Loaded
Hank Fort & Herb Leighton 1949

LYRICS ONLY

Oh Miss Effie was her name

Through the west she won her fame

Being handy with the gun

But she drove the men insane

Cause she’d whip out her pistol

And shoot most any guy

And sing out this alibi

I didn’t know the gun was loaded

And I’m so sorry my friend

I didn’t know the gun was loaded

And I’ll never, never do it again

But one night she made a slip

Shot the sheriff in the hip

So the law it took a hand

And made Effie take the stand

And she pled, ‘oh your honor

I’ll know you turn me loose

When you hear my one excuse’

I didn’t know the gun was loaded

And I’m so sorry my friend

I didn’t know the gun was loaded

And I’ll never, never do it again

I didn’t know the gun was loaded

But regarding the gun that I toted

All I did was hold it high and go ...

BANG, PING, HUHH, ZSSS

I’ll never, never do it again

INSTRUMENTAL

Yes the jury all agreed

That Miss Effie should be freed

But the sheriff’s jealous wife

Was indignant (yes, indeed)

So she borrowed a pistol

And shot this village belle

And sang as Miss Effie fell

I didn’t know the gun was loaded

And I’m so sorry my friend

I didn’t know the gun was loaded

And I’ll never, never do it again

I didn’t know the gun was loaded

But regarding the gun that I toted

All I did was hold it high and go ...

BANG, PING, HUHH, ZSSS

I’ll never, never do it again

Years ago when I lived on the farm, hubby was teaching me how to load and unload a shotgun with a very very sensitive safety, blew a hold in the back room wall, missed the old furnace by inches, blasted a 2 X 4 behind the wall, and thank God it didn't go thought the bathroom wall. He warned me never to tell anyone about it, I kept that promise until our kids came to visit and had to show them the hole...One of my son's still lived with us at that time, and he was in the shower in the back room. Lucky the gun was not pointed toward the shower...Son emerged from shower with towel wrapped about his waist and said as he passed us..”Guess its time to get an apartment”...20 years later and I still laugh at it...

I tell my nephew to assume that there’s an invisible bullet. He’s young enough that that makes more sense to him than “pretend there is when there isn’t.

#1) Always, always, always, always, always, always assume a gun is loaded no matter how unloaded you think it is.

Amen, brother. Amen.

Clearly stated by the NRA Training Dept., in NRA instructor guides and student handbooks: NO LIVE AMMO IN THE CLASSROOM - EVER. Numb nuts instructor; his NRA creds are gone forever, and should be.

Florida has been at the sleazy end of the concealed carry industry for too long now. Anyone who thinks a 4-hour NRA “First Steps Pistol Orientation” (note the word “Orientation”, not “class”) and a single .22 Colibri round shot into a sand pile will allow safe concealed carry should have his head examined. The self-created “Uncle Billy’s Shootin’ and Killin’ Concealed Carry” courses are even worse.

There are two great NRA courses - Personal Protection In The Home and Personal Protection Outside The Home - you can’t give ‘em away in Florida. Sleazebag instructors are too busy hawking the “Home Firearm Safety” course. Shame, shame.

“What was live ammo doing there!”

Asking myself the same question.

Uh my CCL class in NC involved shooting our weapons to demonstrate proficiency. That means live ammo. PLEASE don't tell me there are states that issue a CCL without actually having you fire the weapon.....

It’s very simple: all guns are loaded. Keep your goddamn finger out of the trigger guard even if you know with absolute certainty that the gun isn’t loaded. Don’t point the muzzle at anything you don’t want to destroy. If a “certified instructor” doesn’t know the condition of his weapon at all times, or how to retract and lock a slide without contacting the trigger, maybe he shouldn’t have been certified.

Lots of 'em - check out handgunlaw.us

That having been said, NOBODY gets through our CCW courses without going to the range. We also keep the qualification target in our permanent files.

RULE II: NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO DESTROY
RULE III: KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

It said he was teaching a class. That does not mean it happened in the classroom.
However, I wouldn’t be surprised either way.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is one. Why should I have to prove anything about my abilities, especially in an open carry state.

From our constitution:

Right to Bear Arms Section 21.

The right of the citizens to bear arms in defense of themselves and the State shall not be questioned.

Where in there is anything about getting a license to conceal.
