WHARTON -- It began as a battle of the titans, with Rick Perry -- the longest serving governor in Texas history -- being challenged in the GOP primary by the state's senior U.S. senator, Kay Bailey Hutchison.
But as the multimillion-dollar contest comes to a close, Perry's bid for another four-year term appears to hinge not only on Hutchison's strength but on the fate of the third candidate in the race -- Debra Medina, a once-obscure insurgent whose showing in the March 2 primary will decide whether Perry wins outright or faces an April runoff. With Perry holding a seemingly insurmountable lead in polls, the governor's race in recent weeks began evolving into a surprise battle for second place as Medina appeared to be within striking distance of overtaking Hutchison, one of the state's dominant political figures.
But Medina's detractors -- as well as several independent analysts -- say she may have self-destructed in a Feb. 11 interview with conservative commentator Glenn Beck by not immediately disavowing a theory that the U.S. government may have played a role in the 9-11 terrorist attacks.
The former Wharton County Republican chairwoman quickly sought to repair the damage, saying there was no doubt that Muslim terrorists flew the hijacked planes on 9-11. Medina now says she believes the incident may have strengthened her candidacy by galvanizing supporters, positioning her for a strong showing against her two Republican rivals.
"Did it feel good? No. Am I sick of answering the questions? Yes. I am," she said in an hourlong interview last week in her Wharton campaign headquarters. "But at the end of day, I think it's going to be labeled backfire," she added, repeating her contention that she was set up in Beck's interview.

I voted for Perry. KBH is a nutjob.
LOL !
Freepmail me or ping me from the original thread to get on/off the 2010 Texas Governor's Race ping list.
I live in Texas. Perry is going to win in a landslide. People here see KBH as a good person who has spent too long in DC. They took a look at Medina, or were seriously starting to, when she outed herself as a lightwight truther.
Perry is running effectively on a “Texan for Texas, hands off DC” platform. He turned away the “stimulus” money because of the strings attached, and Texas is better off for it. He’s not perfect, but he’s more than good enough.
Aint broke, Texas isn’t going to “fix” it...
Great observations and conclusions!!
Medina has been saving her powder for the primary’s.
She is running ads now.
I am seeing signs in yards around here.
I think she is going to beat out Kay.
Sadly Debra is aligned with the Ron Paul Kook set and she is a political neophyte. Perry will win reelection easily.
I am not a Perry fan but I will vote for him again.
Perry has been good for the Texas economy for the most part.
What about Farouk Shami? LoL
Have you heard this muslim dipshits ads?
They are all ominous and rooted in Texas history.... then you hear this guy that sounds like Apu say “I am Farouk Shami! And I approve this message”! Hilarious and scary LoL
The guy is a PLO sympathizer.
Perry is good at sticking his finger up in the air and going along with whatever the prevailing winds tell him, he has no core beliefs, and I trust him about as far as I could throw him.
"Mein RonPaul! I kan valk!"
I agree with you 100%
Cute but Ron Paul is an anti-truther. He thinks their theories are nonsense.
Medina’s handlers are steadily destroying their wannabe...
He has kept Texas prosperous.
Though he has also increased the cost of living here.
Medina lacks experience.
Perry is a known commodity.
I presume they mean a run off between Hutchison and Perry?
But if Perry bested Hutchison in the primary, wouldn’t a good Republican bow out in order to let Perry concentrate on the general election, rather than forcing a run off?
He sure has a lot of followers that are flat out conspiracy theorist.
