LOS ANGELES, Feb 19 (Reuters) - The U.S. government's majority stake in General Motors Co GM.UL has no bearing on the response of regulators to safety problems at Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T)(TM.N), Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said on Friday.
"That argument is baloney," LaHood said when asked about the issue during an appearance in Los Angeles.
Questions about whether the government stands to benefit as a GM shareholder from its regulatory crackdown on Toyota gained some steam this week with a number of critics suggesting at least the appearance of a conflict of interest.

of course there is conflict of interest. Would LaHood want the Toyota Board to police GM? why cant the govt sell GM back to private investors and give the proceeds to the taxpayer?

I don't believe them...and that is the problem with the government nationalizing corporations....well, that and it's communistic.

In the meantime, yack is going around the grapevine alleging that Toyotas have suffered a stuck accelerator problem in models where neither of the fixes proferred by Toyota (poor fitting mat, software fix) is applicable. Now it’s not 100% certain this yack is originating with the unions/Rats, but I’d give it a 95%.

Who in the world believes anything LaHood has to say about the matter?
He went on TV and said anyone driving a Toyota should immediately park it.
He purposefully damaged a car company competing with Obama Motors.

Out of equity , they should have given grants or gifted cash to Ford , Chrysler et al, just for the sake of equating shareholder value. I mean what the heck? If the taxpayer is taking care of one, it needs to take care of the others!
What crap! Gm should have learned to live withing their means out of competition. They could have done like others and restructured themselves, pared what they didnt need , didnt pay, didnt work and worked around their problems. What did Ford have to do? one example...they made a better truck.
