YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (Associated Press) -- A former Ohio congressman who served seven years in prison for corruption says he's leaving the Democratic Party and considering a run for office as an independent.
James Traficant (TRAF'-eh-kehnt) made the announcement Saturday on his talk show on WTAM-AM in Cleveland. He did not specify which seat he was eyeing for a run.
Traficant was elected to nine terms as a Democrat from Youngstown before serving time for racketeering, bribery, obstruction of justice and tax evasion. He was released in September.

He waited until after he leaves prison?
I heard him say this a couple of weeks ago on his radio show.
Funny thing is that he still pulled some 13% of the vote while he was in prison.
Oh my God! He’s coming back! LOL!
“Beam me up Scotty!”
“...racketeering, bribery, obstruction of justice and tax evasion. ...”
He’s a prime candidate for the Obamaloon cabinet.
Do I remember right?
Didn’t Rush love to run Traficant’s clips back when he had his TV show.
The AMA needs to recognize chronic office-seeking as a disease, the same as they have with alcoholism and other forms of addiction.
Will he get his hairpiece back?
Forget I said anything.
He must be too nervous to steal, so he’s trying to go back to where its legal.
. . . racketeering, bribery, obstruction of justice and tax evasion.Well, he's certainly overqualified to political office.
Trafficant seems fairly competent and “normal” compared to what’s been in Congress since he’s been in jail.
Hope he wins his election!
The Independents or anyone else for that matter should not accept him.
And throughout Ohio Democrats are falling to their knees saying, "Thank you, God!"
That's part of what makes this whole scene so hilarious. ( ^: }
Addicted to power - they have major control issues. They have the answers and always right. And then they get paid for it - what a great deal while taxpayers enable them.
Good idea. I agree - it should be looked on as a disease. To name a few...the clinton’s, carter, Mitt, Newt, McCain - who just can’t let go! Then there is Lautenberg (DNJ), at 86, in the hospital w/cancer w/no plans to retire. And Byrd. They need power to survive for they are empty shells without it - w/o telling others what they must and can do.
