not to defend the press......

but the whole “...I am in control here”

stank to high heaven of coup d'etat.

poor choice of words I suspect....but maybe not. I don't know.

He had a good measure and did a good job. I’m sure that St Peter is welcoming him with open arms. Rest in peace, Al.

All Republicans are treated shamefully unless they are ‘reaching across the aisle’. Then when they veer to the right they are scathed. It is now a badge of honor for Republicans to be trashed by the Press. It means they are effective.

I have to be honest here, I still remember his response after Reagan’s assasination. I was just a kid, having cast my first-ever vote for president.

It was a head-scratcher, his response. I can picture it like it was yesterday (with visions of my high school history teacher pounding both my brain cells with a line of succession quizzes to follow!)

Rest in peace, General Haig. You served with great loyalty in times of great danger to our nation.

The link posted contains the quote:

Hours after the shooting, then-Secretary of State Haig went before the cameras intending, he said later, to reassure Americans that the White House was functioning.

"As of now, I am in control here in the White House, pending the return of the vice president," Haig said.

Somehow that last bit is never quoted.

General Haig participaated in seven Korean War campaigns including the Battle of Inchon, the Battle of Chosin Reservoir and Evacuation of Hungnam. He earned two Silver Stars for heroism and a Bronze Star with Valor device.

In 1967 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation's second highest medal for heroism (fighting in hand-to-hand combat in human-wave assaults).

He was also awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart.

Taps for a true hero in the pantheon of American heroes. Rest in peace, soldier. Thanks you for your noble service on our behalf.

Did not mean it as slam on the man.
Had a fellow squadron member in the AF who had met the general. Was assigned as an air liason officer to a unit of Army grunts in Germany ( not duty any fighter pilot relishes). During a REFORGER exercise he was in the field, cold, wet, muddy and not at all happy. As he was sitting near a heater trying to get warm, he hears a voice behind him “mind if I sit down soldier?”. Without turning he barks out “ I don’t give a sh#t what you do buddy”. Silence. Turns and sees a guy with 4 stars on his collar. Guess who.

He was talking about at the White house, not the nation. The press took it the way they wanted to and ran with it.

Aside from my recollection of the actual phrase being “I’m in charge here”, how does Vaquero not know what the HELL he’s talking about?

I don’t need to get educated about history; I remember when it was Current Events.

It was a poor choice of words in the immediate aftermath of an attempted assassination of the President. People under extreme pressure (yes, even government officials) sometimes react awkwardly in such situations.

IMO, it was the press who blew this WAY out of proportion, and the suckers in the American public bought it.

I don’t think it was a ‘power grab’ of any sort. Haig was a true patriot and, despite his gaffe, knew how our system of government worked.

Give the guy a break. He served well. RIP, General Haig.
