Hours after the shooting, then-Secretary of State Haig went before the cameras intending, he said later, to reassure Americans that the White House was functioning.
"As of now, I am in control here in the White House, pending the return of the vice president," Haig said.
Somehow that last bit is never quoted.
I just watched the entire video, btw. And it was included.
“Somehow that last bit is never quoted.”
Exactly. Why the hell wouldn’t a General, of all people, know and respect the line of command.
The Marxist sympathizing press is despicable and wicked to their core.
Whatever you do tsmith, do not google his name. You'd think it was Alexander "I'm in Charge" Haig.
The emphasis was on the word "here" meaning in the White House, until then Vice President George Herbert Walker Bush returned.
On all counts, Haig was 100% correct. The media intentionally distorted his comments to make the story bigger, and to try and make the Reagan Administration (who the media HATED) look incompetent.
For those who were feeble enough minded then ... and now... to fall for it, they did.
The rest of us then ... and now know better.
I still remember the day like it was yesterday.
Thanks for posting that. Damn editing by the Dems goes way back.
Leni posted the tributes of this national hero in her post below yours.
Even then, the media had a template. He was military, and the military will always use a crisis to take control, or so their thinking goes. Compare and contrast with today’s civilian leadership, especially the two who currently hold Haig’s previous White House posts.
Yes, absolutely correct. I used to call places (CNN, ABC, CBS whoever) asking that they at least broadcast the entire quote, but it fell on deaf ears. Another lesson about the press learned.
Thanks for the info. I didn’t know that. F’nn press. But that was all there was back in the 80’s.
Also the Act governing Presidential succession requires the Speaker of the House or President Pro Tempore in the Senate to resign their seats in the Congress before becoming Acting President.
That was in the day of the MSM dominance. I was in the Navy when it happened and remember the entire quote, but the lib media took it out of context. That, amongst other things, made me realize how biased the MSM was/is. Yes, he was a little over-bearing and extremely hawkish, but he was a leader at a time we needed to stand up against the Soviet threat/machine.
RIP and thank you Sir for being a true American patriot and not a top brass politician wannabe.
