Elite Marine recon teams were dropped behind Taliban lines by helicopter Friday as the U.S.-led force stepped up operations to break resistance in the besieged insurgent stronghold of Marjah.

About two dozen Marines were inserted before dawn into an area where skilled Taliban marksmen are known to operate, an officer said, speaking on condition of anonymity because of security concerns.

Helicopters?? So hey where is the V-22 in all of this Taliban offensive surge? It made the chopper obsolete for these missions so they inferred.

G*D Speed to our Marines - but I wish rather than inserting them in the midst of these heathens, they’d just drop a gigantic bomb and be done with the whole mess.

My thoughts exactly. Better to give your name than to divulge ANY information about the mission, even to the point of telling that there IS a mission.

They ought to put some kind of "lag" into war news similar to what is used on talk radio with the so-called "7-second delay." War news, like this story, should be on something like a 60-day delay. IOW, stories about the course of the war should be "old news" by the time we hear about it.

Operation security is utmost on their minds and they take it seriously. If the news is out on a Marine Op it's old news for sure.

I hope the rules of engagement allow the Marines to shoot, rather than mirandize.

What kind of a moron would leak this info to the press during an active military operation? This “officer” should be cashiered out of the ranks of warriors and return to his civilian occupation of stooge.

who needs spies to collect actionable information when we have the Associated Press to do the work for us - and we can use the money saved to purchase more IEDs!!

“What kind of a moron would leak this info to the press during an active military operation? This “officer” should be cashiered out of the ranks of warriors and return to his civilian occupation of stooge.”

That assumes that the reports are accurate — or that the leak was not a deliberate one intended as disinformation or a distraction.

The American military has gotten pretty good at playing the press, starting with the Gulf War in 1990-91. Part of the reason we crushed the Iraqi army then was that the military used CNN to convince Saddam Hussain (spit) that we were going to fight the war he wanted us to fight. A series of carefully orchestrated press leaks convinced him that we were going to attach Kuwait City via an amphibious invasion (we came the other way) and that we were concentrating our air strikes on the Republican Guard (when they were only being lightly engaged and our aircraft were concetraing on the Iraqi front-line units).

“US Marines Airdropped Into Taliban-Held Territory”
-
If the marines are there, it is now “formerly taliban-held territory”.

The Osprey is there. VMM-261 is in country, along with Phrogs, Cobras, Hueys and 53s. Each aircraft has its specialty; the V-22 is ideal for this type of insertion, at greater ranges than current ops. So it's an operational decision for the local commander. TC

Now there’s another thing I want you to remember. I don’t want to get any messages saying that we are holding our position. We’re not holding anything. Let the Hun do that. We are advancing constantly and we’re not interested in holding onto anything - except the enemy.
