ATLANTIC CITY Atlantic City police said an officer has died from an accidental gunshot wound.
Police Chief John Mooney said 31-year-old Officer Kevin Wilkins was trying to put a rubber sleeve on the grip of his pistol as he sat in his patrol car around 1:30 a.m. today.
He had removed the ammunition clip, but was struck in the face by the round in the chamber when the gun accidentally discharged.

Its always the round in the chamber ...
Check the chamber!

LEO accidental/negligent discharges typically happen in localities where there's very little native firearms culture. This would seem to be another one.
they must not train these guys well in NJ...most semi autos for police use will fire with a magazine out and a round in the chamber.

“Eyeballing isn’t just for safety — it’s kinda fun too
Hard to believe this veteran didn’t know to look in the “pipe”.

After 31 years, you would think the officer in question would know better. My guess is early senility and/or alcohol.
I am sorry this fellow was killed but he had to be dumber than a rock and had no business handling firearms. I am sure glad he did not shoot another officer or some innocent bystander.
As a veteran officer all I can say is that is no good reason for this to happen. This has nothing to do with training, SOP or anything other than someone doing something just plain stupid.
I am sorry for the guy, and his family. But for God’s sake, one of the first rules of automatic firearms handling is to check and clear the chamber. If I know this and practice it, why doesn’t a cop practice this basic safety rule?
Glock?
He’s 31 years old, not a throwback to the S&W Model 10 days.
Lot’s of cops aren’t gun folks. Add that to familiarity breeding contempt and it’s a recipe for this type of thing.
Verry funny, Cat.
It is a sad story. If you don’t ALWAYS check, ALWAYS assume a gun is loaded. Sadly police don’t follow good weapons-handling advice either, sometimes with fatal consequences. It is good someone else wasn’t accidentally shot.
Whew. Killed by an unloaded gun.
(”All guns are always loaded, always.”)
Good cover story for a suicide. First time I’ve heard that one used.
SAd story but this one doesn’t pass the smell test -—— trained in fire arms and he doesn’t clear the chamber??????
Doesn’t make any sense whatsoever
bfl
31 years????....probable was use to a model 10 S&W revolver.
but either case....you NEVER point a weapon and anything you do not want to destroy...
basic rule.
Forgot the cardinal rule —— never point a gun at anything you don’t want to shoot ( even by accident)
