Vancouver, British Columbia (CNN) -- A man who authorities said apparently suffers from mental illness managed to breach security during the Olympics opening ceremony and get close to U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, Canadian officials said Wednesday.
"Not at any time was the VP in any danger," said Olivier Lapointe, spokesman for the Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit.
The man, who was not identified, used fake credentials to get inside British Columbia Place, the site of the 2010 Winter Olympic opening ceremony Friday, according to Lapointe.
Police apprehended him about 12 rows away from Biden's section, Lapointe said. He briefly escaped police custody, running into a nearby hallway, but was quickly recaptured, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sgt. Gregory Gomez del Prado said.
The man did not have any weapons on him and did not appear to have criminal intentions, Lapointe said. The man likely suffers from mental illness and won't face any criminal charges, Lapointe added.
Lapointe did not describe the credentials used to enter the stadium, but the man had to pass through three security layers to get close to Biden.

Second, if the would-be attacker was "mentally ill" he must be an intelligent crazy person because he know enough to successfully fake an ID for the Opening Ceremonies olympic venue and he got through 3 layers of security to within 12 rows of Biden.

No. The president nominates a new VP and, IIRC, the Senate must concur ... This is how Gerald Ford became Nixon's VP after Agnew resigned.

Here’s what Canadian Royal Mounted Police [and our secret service agents, I presume] considered to be the first two layers of security: “Security included ticket checking (first layer) and a pedestrian screening area equipped with metal detectors” (second layer).

A five year old could come up with more stringent security “layers” than these!
What makes them think he was after Biden?
When they mentioned a man suffering from mental illness, I thought they were referring to Biden.
I don’t know, ‘Stand Up’ Joe looks pretty happy to be standing next to Suzanne Somers, maybe she just whispered to him that she’s going to autograph his Thighmaster.

Thanks for the input - I knew that at least the senate was involved, but I was 12 the last time this happened and memory fails ....
I thought it was interesting that one of the local news reports on the Olympics mentioned the accident involving Peggy Fleming and “Biden and his wife”.
