Ganley out of Senate race
Republican Tom Ganley is expected to quit his race for the U.S. Senate and will run instead against Democratic U.S. Rep. Betty Sutton of Akron.
Sources with knowledge about Ganley's plans said he will make a statement on Thursday. The Ganley campaign declined to comment.
Ganley, a millionaire Cleveland-area car dealer, had been expected to file candidacy petitions tomorrow to challenge former U.S. Rep. Rob Portman of Cincinnati. But even though Ganley had vowed to use his personal wealth in a primary, he faced an uphill fight against Portman, who has $6 million on hand and has been endorsed by the Ohio Republican Party.
Terry Casey, a Columbus-based GOP political consultant, said Ganley would have a better chance against Sutton, who is in her second two-year term. The Ganley name is well-known in northeastern Ohio by dint of his dealerships' ubiquitous advertising and his wealth would be better spent in a race for Sutton's 13th District seat, according to Casey.
"If you got all that money and you've got all that name ID in northeastern Ohio, why do a kamikaze against Portman when you might be able to beat Sutton in this current environment," Casey said.
Ganley's decision to quit the Senate race will permit Portman to save most of his money for the fall campaign against the Democratic Senate nominee. Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher and Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner are running for the party's nomination in the May 4 primary election.
Casey acknowledged that a primary fight against Ganley "would've helped" Portman raise his name-identification statewide, "but it would have depleted part of his checking account for the fall. It's better that he can save the money."

Flame away...but I have to agree.
Portman is RINOish, but he would knock Ganley off in the primary. Let's have Ganley get a seat in the House, and have Portman keep Brunner or Fisher away from Washington.
In this climate, Ganley could very well take Sutton’s seat. I applaud him for recognizing reality.

He is VERY conservative.....geesh...what do you want PURITY?
Portman was known as a bipartisan legislator who reached across the aisle, and he authored or co-authored over a dozen bills that became law. These included bills to reform the Internal Revenue Service (the IRS Restructuring Act of 1998), Cincinnati's National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, curbing unfunded mandates (the Unfunded Mandates Reform Act of 1995[3], expanding pensions offered by small businesses and increasing the contribution limits on 401(k) plans and IRAs. Portman also co-authored legislation to protect tropical rainforests worldwide (The Tropical Forest Conservation Act of 1998), to eliminate capital gains taxes on the sale of most homes, three bills to promote drug prevention and education, and a bill that was very recently enacted to help prisoners safely reenter society (The Second Chance Act of 2008).

Ihad a relative that worked for him....a VERY CONSERVATIVE relative and he said Portman was MORE Conservative than he was!!

It would be interesting to know if he polled the district.
I know Rob Portman. He is a good and decent man and will make a fine Senator from our state. He will, I assure you, make the short list for Veep consideration in 2012.
I don’t think he did. I just recieved an e-mail today stating that he was collecting signatures to be put on the ballot. It was just down the street at a coffee house so I went to sign for him. By the time I got there everyone was gone so I am assuming that enough signatures were gathered. (I hope).
Portman for VP? NO WAY!
1. He hasn’t been elected Senator yet. He has done nothing.
2. What private sector experience does he have? It looks like NONE.
3. Heading up the Office of Management and Budget under the Bush Years is NOT an accomplishment.
Senator from Ohio.. Whatever Ohio people want.
VP? NO WAY!
