Speculation Swirls Around Potential Senate Bid by Rocker John Mellencamp

John Mellencamp, the iconic rocker made famous by his songs about growing up in a small town, may be ready to move to the big city.

Speculation is swirling that the liberal Mellencamp may put down his guitar and run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Evan Bayh.

The Indiana Democrat announced Monday that he will not seek election to a third term in November, sending party leaders scrambling for a viable replacement and boosting Republican hopes of winning the seat. Indiana is generally considered a Republican state, though it went for Barack Obama in 2008.

Support for a Mellencamp bid is gathering momentum; a "Draft John Mellencamp For Senate" Facebook page has emerged with more than 200 members.

Mellencamp is no stranger to politics or to Washington. He asked John McCain to stop using his music during the 2008 presidential campaign. He performed at President Obama's inauguration and has played at the White House, most recently last week at a celebration in honor of the civil rights movement.

So, what makes you so certain about that? A celebutard tends to attract morons to the polls in droves, who would otherwise never vote. Then said morons tune out on politics while the rest of us deal with the ramifications of their ill-thought out, piss-poor decision making. How do you think we got stuck with the moron in the White House?

Unfortunately, I believe you are correct, and I reluctantly have to admit it. I say reluctantly, because it forces me to absorb the fact that we are indeed hindered by a very sad state of affairs. *big sigh*

Oh, yeah. Life goes on. Long after the thrill of livin’ is gone.

My guess is that once Indianans get a whiff of the rock star life style, they’ll reject it big time. Hoosiers are not people who tolerate those who’ll embarrass them.

I wrote a letter to my senator last week telling him to stop spending my hard-earned money and I sang the National Anthem at a major university event once. And I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last week. I guess I'm qualified too.

"... Gee I really like his song about the small town. Maybe I should be ashamed to admit it?"

Yes, you should.

All of John Cougar Mellencamp's songs are about small towns and aimless country teenagers sucking on chili dogs behind the Tastee Freeze and grain silos and rain on the scarecrows and blood on the plows and collapsed mineshafts and croplands turned to dust and farmers losing their land that grandpa cleared to the bank and old trucks and coon hounds with ticks in their ears and shit.

His schtick is basically a complete ripoff of Bruce Springsteen's ballads dedicated to closed steel mills and unemployed union workers standing outside of a factory with the windows painted shut and Vietnam vets dying from Agent Orange while losing their feet to diabetes and highways jammed with SS396 Chevelles carrying broken heroes on a last chance power drive and shit.

Oh, and they both have the sleeves ripped off their denim jackets.

Just ridiculous. You have to be from some alfalfa patch in central Indiana or some Vinnie from a run down steel town in Philadelphia to really like that music. I am not, so I don't.

I like your take on Mellencamp but hey, I still like the song.

You sound like a person of refinement but damn you have no sense of diplomacy.

I was with you but you sure like to insult people, don’t you?

Nobody here was insulting you, but be ashamed that you like Mellencamp.

“...A celebutard tends to attract morons to the polls in drove...”

But remember that even though Obambi won Minnesota big...ole Al Franken was way back losing by over 700 votes until recount shenanigans. This time there will be no coattails.
