The poll is a month old, and the author treats it like it came out yesterday.

I like how the posters at the link are outraged that the Atlantic is calling McCain a centrist.

Meagan, don’t you have anything better to do with your time? You need to stop spending so much time on FR and go find yourself a boyfriend.

It’s kind of cool the Atlantic is using FR as a source. I’m surprised that the heads of its readers haven’t started spinning.

McCain Leads Big; If Hayworth Loses, He'll Back McCain

At this point, this story is meaningless but it does bring to mind a good question. If Hayworth loses the nomination to McCain, will McCain's detractors vote for him or sit out the election? Or vote for a minor party candidate?

"I am going to support the Republican nominee," Hayworth said. "I fully expect to be that nominee."

This is what is in the article.

It is precisely the right thing to say...

Maybe so...mebbe not.

It leaves the impression that the differences between McCain and JD are not substantial.

John McCain has been a great patriot.

Now he needs to put America before his personal desires and retire from the U.S. Senate.

He needs to get his own house in order (wife & daughter) and let Arizona advance with a true conservative.

That’s an old poll, taken before JD even got started. It would be nice if posters actually read the articles they post.

It leaves the impression that the differences between McCain and JD are not substantial.

The differences between JD and any Democrat will be even more substantial.

And, again, it sets up McCain for the very same question.

1. Which, if he agrees to support Hayworth, makes Hayworth a valid option for those who might be on the fence.

2. But, if he refuses to support Hayworth, then McCain is the bitter-ender, take my ball and go home sort. Which might piss off those same fence-sitters.

There was nothing to be won by a selfish "my way or the highway" stance, anyway.

This thread motivated me to donate $50 to JD’s campaign. Thanks, Meandog! You’re support of Judas McNasty is duly noted.

I doubt they would go to the FR link. It's kind like the devil going to church. ZAP!

Polls released by campaigns on 1/30:

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0110/32256.html
“The Senate primary fight between Arizona Sen. John McCain and former GOP Rep. J.D. Hayworth continued to heat up Friday, with both sides firing off dueling polling data.

Hayworth’s campaign released a polling memo Friday morning showing McCain leading Hayworth 49 to 33 percent among Arizona Republican primary voters. The poll also showed a plurality of primary voters – 49 percent – identifying McCain as a “moderate,” with 50 percent identifying Hayworth as a conservative.

“John McCain is vulnerable to a challenge by J.D. Hayworth in Arizona’s Republican primary election for U.S. Senate,” pollster John McLaughlin wrote in the polling memo. “His support on the ballot is below the 50% threshold for strong incumbents against J.D. Hayworth, and his moderate political views and Washington agenda are out of step with Arizona Republican primary voters.”

Not missing a beat, the McCain campaign responded by releasing a poll Friday afternoon showing McCain with a 59 percent to 30 percent lead over Hayworth. The Public Opinion Strategies survey also showed 82 percent of GOP primary voters in the state view McCain favorably. Hayworth’s favorability stands at 60 percent.

“Senator John McCain continues to enjoy broad support across Arizona,” McCain campaign manager Shiree Verdone said in an e-mail. “[He] is confident the voters of Arizona will again return him to office as they have done in the past and he is working hard to earn their continued support. “

A Rasmussen Reports survey conducted earlier this month found McCain leading Hayworth by a 53 percent to 31 percent margin.”

It is interesting watching McVain show some energy against a candidate, for a change. He won't win this the way he got the prez nom, with a sneaky backroom deal with Huck.

This is an unusual position for him to be in, actually having to act the Republican. Even if he does win, I will have enjoyed his obvious contortions. Obama is a swell guy, he said, but a fellow Repub a jerk. He still has the heiress, and JD can't compete with the money.
