The largest natural oil and gas seeps in the Western Hemisphere lie in the Santa Barbara Channel. According to the California State Lands Commission, they comprise more than 1,200 of the over 2,000 active submarine seeps along the California coast. Half of these occur within three miles of an area called Coal Oil Point, located just west of Santa Barbara near the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) campus.
It is estimated that oil seepage for a single 6-mile stretch, including Coal Oil Point, averages 10,000 gallons of oil each day (240 barrels). Every 12 months about 86,000 barrels of oil seep into the oceanthe equivalent of the quantity of oil spilled in the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara. Since 1970, the quantity of oil that naturally seeps into the Santa Barbara Channel equals ~ 31 "1969" oil spills.
SOS California's Solution:
Education
* Only through education can Californians and Americans learn the truth about the massive amounts of natural oil and gas seepage pollution coming from offshore Santa Barbara, California's coastal areas. Since Native Americans first arrived in coastal California, approximately 800 million barrels of oil have seeped into the coastal environment. * Peer reviewed published reports document the connection between existing Santa Barbara offshore oil production and natural seepage pollution reductions over the last 20 years and the larger natural seepage pollution reduction potential through expanded offshore oil and gas production.
Policy Changes We Support
* Lifting the California state and federal moratoriums on offshore oil exploration and production through legislative and executive action.
Ping.

Also got one that was provided to us via Senator Demint.
I notice how similarly they look.
Yep Drill extensively and extract the oil!
Oil is seeping naturally? I know how to stop it,, we drill a deep hole and suck all the oil from the ground in that area! Bada-bing,,one stone, 2 birds!
Yep. That’s exactly what this group advocates for over in california.
Legislature in Sacramento declares this area Seep-Free Zone...moves on to transgender studies in public schools.
So to all the enviro wackos i ask this....SO WHAT????
Numerous other locales between there and the Santa Barbara Channel have tar, or pitch scattered along the bottom. Brought to the surface, it first looks much like obsidian, until or unless the suns rays warm it, causing it to melt into a gooey mess.
Microscopic bugs thrive on crude petroleum (it's an excellent fertilizer, albeit an expensive one), and they drive the rest of the food chain.
Additionally, oil companies stop oil seeps when they drill offshore -- they don't want to miss out on the revenue and they don't want to be blamed for the mess.
And the oil companies have unsuccessfully been trying to point this out for years.
In other words, common sense and reason do not apply to the environmental lobby.
Exactly. There is so much oil, so close to the surface that its coming up whether you drill for it or not.
And California sits there, bankrupt, so far in the red that red is all you can see, half the people out of work, and refusing to use what God gave them.
They’ll blame everyone and anyone but themselves. And they’ll reelect the people who keep doing this to them, because in the end they themselves are the problem.
Like the old saying goes, "You can lead a jackass to oil, but you can't make him drill."
ping
Also peak oil is BS. The earth’s core is a nuke reactor making new oil every day. The tremendous heat and pressure are making new oil each day.
By drilling offshore, you have fewer seeps and LESS pollution.
The envirowackos would be happy to support your plan if only we could appropriate billions in Federal money to suck the oil of out of the seafloor and spend many more $billions disposing of it...
I remember from many years ago, that subject was discussed in Long Beach/Terminal Island area. At that time Fonda/Hayden were very active in anti drilling, and told lie after lie about seepage. This needs to be elevated to a National level.
>> The envirowackos would be happy
Not possible.
And we know damn well that Boxer, Fenstein, and Pelosi know all about this.
It seems to me that if "Big Evil Oil" companies tapped this field, it would releive pressure, and there'd be less seepage.
Or... what did I miss?
I can remember riding my motorcycle through the town of Ojai, just inland from santa barbara, stopping at a light and observing oil flowing down a drainage channel. Upon further observation I could see it was coming out of an outcrop of sedimentary rocks by the roadside.
