The person who serves the unexpired term of the late Rep. Jack Murtha could be the last to hold the 12th Congressional District seat, political experts say.
"You could envision it," said Erik Arneson, press secretary for state Senate Republicans, on the possibility of slow population growth eliminating the 12th District in 2011.
Murtha, who will be buried today near his hometown of Johnstown, died at age 77 of complications arising from gallbladder surgery. He served 36 years in Congress. His term expires at the end of this year.
Franklin & Marshall College political analyst G. Terry Madonna says Murtha's is the likely seat to be eliminated once Census Bureau figures confirm Pennsylvania's slow population growth.
"Odds are that district will get carved out," he said Monday.

In honor of this great man and his accomplishments may I suggest to the city fathers of Johnstown that they erect public bathrooms directly over the gravesite of John Murtha.

Well, since there is still the flood tax to help Johnstown, this is not happening anytime soon :-)!
The real abomination is that in all the media coverage of his death in the PA papers, I didn’t see any mention of his role in the 1970s or early 80s ABSCAM sting, and the video telling the undercover FBI agents that he wasn’t willing to take the bride “at this time” but he wanted stuff for businesses in his district.
Amazing how when a Dem is caught with his hand in the cookie jar, we declare it “old news”. When Dubya was running, the media was looking at his pre-birth ultrasounds to find evidence of illegal activity.
FYI...the same thing is sure ti happen to the NY 23rd.
If a Rep becomes Gov, will he have a voice, or veto, on any re-district plans that would eliminate a Rep seat?

Which is at least 6, maybe 7 or 8, times longer than anyone should be allowed to serve.
