Lake Erie now frozen over

241-mile stretch all ice for 1st time since 1995-96

Take a picture of Lake Erie now, and you'll get a freeze frame.

For the first time in 14 years, the 241-mile-long lake is virtually frozen over from one end to the other.

Earlier this week, the Erie Times-News reported that the lake was 90 to 95 percent frozen. The relentless cold completed the job.

Gary Garnet, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Cleveland, said Friday that the lake is completely frozen over, for all intents and purposes.

He qualified that by saying satellite images show a small patch off Dunkirk, N.Y., with water and chunks of floating ice. He said that's one of the deepest parts of the lake and would be one of the last places to freeze.

The ice cover will mean fewer lake-effect snowstorms, or at least less intense ones. Lake- effect snowstorms occur when cold air passes over warmer bodies of water, building up clouds and dumping snow downwind.

"It doesn't completely shut off the snow machine, but it does greatly reduce it,'' Garnet said.

That's because there can be what Garnet called "minimum moisture transfer'' through the ice and the cracks.

So perhaps the AGW loons can explain how Global Warming causes a large lake to completely freeze over for the first time in 14 years ?

Yes, Lake Erie is now frozen over.

I see it every day when I’m at work 40 floors up.

Good, because it will cut down on the lake effect snow.

"Very seriously, ladies and gentlemen, this global warming hoax, this climate change stuff borders on criminal corruption, criminal political corruption. You think of all of the billions that have been spent ostensibly to protect things and people from global warming, and it's all been a scam, nothing more than a huge transfer of wealth. It is a giant scam. It is political corruption, what has happened. It's funny to listen to these people make fools of themselves and I love doing it, and it's not very hard. Just play their own words. I just got a note from a good friend: "Way to go, Rush, very smooth. You made 'em look foolish." I replied: "Easy. They are." But they're also dangerous. This is political criminal corruption, what is happening here, and just as they have ensnared the media to provide all kinds of propaganda for all the other political corruption that comes from liberalism, the Democrat Party, et al, they're doing it in global warming as well. Think of the money that need not have been spent on any of this. It's getting crazier and crazier."

Good news for Buffalo, NY. No more lake effect snow for them until Erie thaws some.

Just out of curiosity does anyone have a link to data that shows how much ice cover extends in the Artic this winter? I’m arguing with liberal family members who insist that the Arctic ice pack is at an all time low and polar bears are in danger.

The other unfrozen lakes will still produce snow in the general region, but those located down wind from Erie should get a break. However, some evaporation does occur through the ice and in between cracks in the ice.

Lake Erie does freeze over from time to time. Not every year, but once in a while. I guess that this is one of those “once in a while” times.

Sorry, AlGore...

I wonder what the average thickness of the ice about a mile out from shore is. Would it be thick enough to drive on. I know they can on the northern parts of Lake Michigan.

Gosh. And I thought ‘96 was supposedly one of the hottest years EVER! Plus, it’s been getting hotter ever since. How can this be? How could this have happened again, given Algore says Mother Earth will soon be a molten ball of fire? Must be global warming. Lefty thinking is so logical.

So this means we're gonna hear all about how Global Warming has reduced the lake-effect snowstorms! :) You can't win!

Seize the moment! Now is our chance!

For years, I have been advocating a U.S. invasion of Canada. Roll the tanks across the frozen Lake Erie, cut the highway and rail links between Montreal and Toronto, and close the ring around Ottawa.

Manitoba and Saskatchewan will quickly defect to the U.S., and British Columbia will be cut off.

James Knox Polk avenged at last! Fifty-four fifty or fight!
