Series of missteps by climate scientists threatens climate-change agenda (WaPo wakes up!)
Washington Post ^ | February 15, 2010 | Juliet Eilperin and David A. Fahrenthold

With its 2007 report declaring that the "warming of the climate system is unequivocal," the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change won a Nobel Prize -- and a new degree of public trust in the controversial science of global warming.

But recent revelations about flaws in that seminal report, ranging from typos in key dates to sloppy sourcing, are undermining confidence not only in the panel's work but also in projections about climate change. Scientists who have pointed out problems in the report say the panel's methods and mistakes -- including admitting Saturday that it had overstated how much of the Netherlands was below sea level -- give doubters an opening.

It wasn't the first one. There is still a scientific consensus that humans are causing climate change. But in the past year, a cache of stolen e-mails, revealing that prominent climate scientists sought to prevent the publication of works by their detractors, has sullied their image as impartial academics. The errors in the U.N. report -- a document intended to be the last nail in the coffin of climate doubt -- are a serious problem that could end up forcing environmentalists to focus more on the old question of proving that climate change is a threat, instead of the new question of how to stop it.

Two Republican senators who have long opposed a cap on carbon emissions, James M. Inhofe (Okla.) and John Barrasso (Wyo.), are citing the errors as further reasons to block mandatory limits on greenhouse gas emissions. Last week, Barrasso called for an independent probe into the IPCC, suggesting that the United States should halt any action on climate until it verifies the panel's scientific conclusions.

Inhofe said Thursday in the Senate that the Environmental Protection Agency's efforts to curb greenhouse gases should be reexamined...

Series of missteps? I guess this is what Wash Post calls FRAUD missteps. These people should be in jail.

The scientific consensus of which they speak must consist entirely of single, white, female, liberal, elementary science teachers who divide their time between teaching climate change and making Kwanzaa ornaments.

Lesbian. You forgot lesbian.

LOL! Thank you both. Now if you'll excuse me I must clean the Dr. Pepper off of my monitor.

Thanks, BTW, I can’t tell if the “downward arrow” means that sales have slowed on their own, or that it was (briefly) almost impossible to get the book. But the production faucets are back on again!

That’s waking up?...

DC Post Runs With Climategate; NY Times Still in Tank

Here’s a thought for the truly twisted conspiracy theorists to chew on: could the New York Times be working for a Republican victory this fall? Probably not, but the paper of record couldn’t be doing more to help the GOP on this issue if it tried.

This is no wake-up, they’re still covering up. AGW is a fraud and they should say so.

There is still a scientific consensus that humans are causing climate change.
Y'know, among scientist who are A) illiterate, B) ignorant of the contents of any of the so-called studies made by global warming advos, C) scientifically illiterate, and D) part of the group of global warming shills. Thanks neverdem.

As soon as someone utters the phrase “scientific consensus”; they reveal their total ignorance of science. Science isn't “settled” by a vote. Every single scientific advance, has been at the expense of the previous “scientific consensus”. It just takes one opposing scientist, and the truth, to demolish the old paradigm.

This is no wake-up, they’re still covering up.

They're waking up to Climategate and the threat it poses. There wasn't enough room in the title for Climategate. Check the link in comment# 25.

The article may not be a come-to-Jesus moment for the WaPost. But it still is a breakthrough. No longer the swagger, but a fear that they project. Also, now the warming adherents can’t argue that the science is completely on the up-and-up, but admit that problems exist. They’re on defense, not offense now. Big change.

I predicted months ago that the British would cover this scandal more faithfully and honestly. The American press will be unable to hold the fort once the Brits are through with it. This article is just a weak example of more to come.

FROM NOV. 25, 2009 WASHINGTON POST EDITORIAL, ‘CLIMATE OF DENIAL’ ON CLIMATEGATE:

“By our reckoning — and that of most scientists, policymakers and almost every government in the world — the probability that the planet will warm in the long term because of human activity is extremely high, and the probability that allowing it to do so unabated will have disastrous effects is unacceptably large. The case that governments should hedge against that outcome is formidable enough. Climate scientists should not let themselves be goaded by the irresponsibility of the deniers into overstating the certainties of complex science or, worse, censoring discussion of them.”

Precisely. There was “consensus” (albeit forced) over Lysenko’s theories.

“There is still a scientific consensus that humans are causing climate change”

Yup -the new snake oil sales pitch and this writer has it down pat. The very scientists that have done the work on Global warming are the scientists that have been cooking the data and the same group of scientists that she says forms the consensus. Does she think scientists vote on it or something?

I do think it would be fair to say, that there is consensus among socialists and communists that global warming is caused by man.

It is also fair to say that there is a consensus among those scientists that were paid millions of dollars to prove that global warming is caused by man that believe it was.

I would also agree that there is a consensus among Democrats that believe that a scientific consensus proving global warming exists - does exist.

Until we have scientific proof using good data that is not cherry picked or “adjusted” and the studies have been peer reviewed by scientists that have not taken millions of dollars from special interest groups to prove that it exists, we won’t know for sure.
