Our prayers to Edd and Nina, as well as all the entire Hendee family, on the loss of their son, Edd Jr.

A Connecticut man died on Saturday after he hit a tree while skiing on Stratton Mountain, according to the Winhall Police Department.

Edd K. Hendee, 33, of Riverside, Conn., was pronounced dead around noon on Saturday, police said.

Winhall Police Sgt. Thomas Crowe said Hendee had been on the mountain skiing with a friend. Around 11 a.m., Hendee took the North American Trail. The trail is rated for experts, but Hendee’s family and friends told police he was an expert skier.

Hendee was last seen at the top of the trail, but police believe he skied off the groomed trail and struck a large tree. He was not wearing a helmet.

Emergency responders were called around 11:10 a.m. and members of the Winhall Police Department, Stratton Mountain Rescue, and the Stratton Mountain Ski Patrol responded within two minutes, but Hendee was already in full cardiac arrest.

Resuscitation efforts were started immediately and continued for almost an hour on the mountain and at the Carlos Otis Medical Clinic at Stratton Mountain.

Hendee is survived by his wife, Claudine Hendee, and three children.

How very sad. I wonder if it would have made a difference if he was wearing a helmet.

Stratton is very icy at present - the expert trails are all long skied-off.

RIP Edd Hendee Jr.

The ski industry is very quiet about all the losses in the sport. We lost two here in Maine this week.
Bless the family in their grief

Somehow, I doubt it. Full force against a tree often is not just a head problem; it’s a torso problem and possibly even ruptured critical arteries, too, or broken neck. Helmets aren’t going to stop any of that.

They always make a point of stating such (helmet, seatbelt) when it works in the nanny state’s favor, regardless of details. When it doesn’t, there’s no mention.

A lady friend of mine was home one day doing laundry in her basement when she suddenly just dropped to the floor. Brain aneurysm. She was in great health and no sign of any problems. No warning, just *boom* and she was gone.

The first thing we should all do when we get up in the morning is give thanks for another day of life. We take it for granted way too often.

I just heard this on the morning show. I’m so sorry for Edd and the loss of his son. His whole family must be so devastated. It’s hard enough to lose a loved one, but when you lose one of your own children - I can’t even begin to imagine the pain.

My prayers and thoughts go out to all of them during such a difficul time. :o(

Colorado has also had more than the usual number of fatal ski accidents this year.

I “made” my kid wear a helmut when riding his bicycle... he really disliked it, especially when he considered the fact that nearly every other kid in town did not wear one. In time, he became confortable in a helmet and eventually, grew to embrace the security of the protective shell encompassing his head. What was the catalyst? I had watched a daytime tv show, where the program consisted of preventable childhood tragedies being discussed by parents that had lost their children in such fatal “accidents.” One woman described how her twelve year old daughter stopped her bike at a stop sign, lost her balance and toppled over, only to have her head strike the curb. Just that quick, a blow to her head killed her.

Tough as nails bull riders are starting to recognize the value in head protection.

As a helmet wearing skydiver, I’d definitely want a helmet when going up against a tree. In a twisted admonition to be safe, skydivers remind one another that if you kill yourself skydiving, you’ll look like an idiot to your peers and you won’t be able to ever skydive again. Reminds the brave to be ever cautious in the pursuit of their endeavor, or be prepared to pay the ultimate price.

A beautiful life has been snuffed out, and perhaps, just perhaps, in this instance, an ounce of prevention might have delivered a pound of cure. Easy to say all of this from the command and control center of a keyboard warrior’s observation post.

Blunt trauma affects more than just the head....it can be just as destructive to internal organs and the circulatory system.
