Haiti and the blacks! (black African journalist from Botswana)
The Sunday Standard ^ | 24.01.2010 | Loose Canon

Posted on 02/14/2010 9:29:59 AM PST by fishhound

I hope black people will learn a lesson from the earthquake that hit Haiti. If they don’t learn anything from it, then I throw up my hands in despair and give up.

Let’s start with a few basic facts. Until the earthquake, I never knew there was a place called Haiti. I was taught geography at school but I cannot remember a time when the mistress told us about Haiti. It must have been one of those insignificant countries that we had no reason to know about.

I was fairly good at geography because I knew which country was on which continent. I also knew many capital cities. But as for Haiti I was clueless.

Now the whole world, including myself, knows about Haiti. I heard news of the earthquake on the radio. I wondered where Haiti was and what sort of people lived there.

Finally, when I switched on the television, I was informed that Haiti is an island out in the Caribbean. Television pictures revealed a place populated by black people.

From the non-stop television coverage of the earthquake, I got to learn about the history of Haiti. It was not a good history lesson. It would seem throughout its existence Haiti has suffered a series of natural calamities. In the process it has sunk even deeper into poverty and deprivation.

Like all places populated by black people, Haiti is poor. As I watched the television images, I felt very sorry for that forsaken place. Then I was hit by a thunderbolt.

Loose Cannon is the pen name of a black African journalist. He is considered a satirist. He likes America. This may raise some hackles but I thought it a good and challenging article. The last line is a jab at Robert Mugabe. Here's a quote...

"I am sick and tired of big words such as imperialism and neo colonialism which are unable to rescue victims of the earthquake."

He makes a good point that all the worlds hell holes that scream about US ‘Imperialism’ are the first ones to come running to the ‘evil’ US for help when their idiot ad inept governments are unable to handle any serious problems

The answer to his question is deeper than suspected. In truth, it goes all the way to the definition of what makes a world power.

World powers must have three elements, which are economic strength, a powerful military, and the will to “force project” as needed outside of their own nation. By this definition, the current world powers are the US, Russia, China, India, Japan, and sort-of the EU, England, France and Germany.

Force projection does not have to be harmful, in fact it can be very beneficial. Such as the relief of Haiti. It means that military and commercial transport can take goods and people to where they need to be.

And the bottom line is that “black nations” are unable to do this. On the surface it may seem like they are, but the truth is that the expertise, the wealth, the military and commercial skill, and the will to do so just cannot be mustered.

This guy, Loose Canon, is a right conservative fella. At least he’s got the courage to see things as they are, and call it like it is.

He’s right that you didn’t see major aid contingents from any black countries respond to Haiti’s dire need. I can understand that no African countries sent hospital ships, airborne food transports, or heavy equipment. They’re not affluent nations, for the most part.

But surely, almost every African nation could have sent rescue workers and doctors. If the nations of Africa have indeed failed to respond to Haiti’s need, then they deserve to be ignored by the world community from here out.

Maybe that’s what the power projecting countries could do instead of sending in our own rescue workers...provide the lift necessary to bring in 100,000’s of African and Caribbean rescue workers and then evacuate the victims to the nearby Caribbean islands for care. Take a back seat and allow other countries to exercise their systems.

We left that part of the world about 7 months ago (S.A. Botswana, Lesotho etc.)I can attest that the white people are the only one helping the poor local nationals. Their gov’t officials (and our NGOs to some extent) don’t give a damn about their misery; yet at the end of the day the “poor blacks” scream that we are there to rape and pillage their country and we should give them $$ to compensate for everything we took.

Loose cannon is a ray of sunshine, I wish there were more people like him in Africa

African countries were as free to volunteer money, food, and manpower, as any other country when this catastrophe occurred.

Any African government could have asked for assistance in transporting material aid to Haiti, and they likely would have would have gotten it.

I’m sure that one of the reasons these countries have stood back, is because of the bare-bones reality that the so-called super powers are most able to take effective control over such massive calamities, and to do the heavy lifting and co-ordination that must be done to save the most lives possible. Facts is just facts.

But let me ask this: where is the UN, and what are they doing to help the people of Haiti? Shouldn’t they be the largest presence on the scene, given their mission and mandate?

Yet again, it’s the US who are carrying the bulk of the freight, and doing most of the heavy lifting. But, we’re the most reviled country on earth, right?

I say we secede from the planet. Screw ‘em.

I will never forget the picture of the young man wearing an Osama bin Laden tee-shirt screaming “where is America?” after the tsunami.
Osama certainly didn;t provide any aid.

The UN had a force of some 9000 "peacekeepers" in Haiti when the earthquake hit. Some of them were killed. Many others, who knows what they have been doing.

If thr U.S pulled all support from the U.N., I believe it would come crashing down.

Common sense isn’t. Right now, Africa is just catching up to what Europe learned over a thousand years. Perhaps more people die in the process in Africa, but only because there are more people to kill.

“I want the next one to specifically hit the residence of Old Man in Harare. Then we will see if he will abuse the white crew coming to rescue him and Pretty Face!”

Do I detect a bit of animosity for the ‘Old Man of Harare’ and ‘Pretty Face’?

Bottom line: Loose Cannon is today’s African version of Gordon Sinclair on his observations of what real freedom allows a nation to do for another nation.

I recommend a YouTube search for those that are not familiar with the name of Gordon Sinclair.

I lived in Zimbabwe 25 years ago, right after independence. There were the beginnings of Charities run by Black Africans, such as Jairos Jiri, which ran homes for the disabled.

At that time, ZImbabwe was also 5th in the world in sending missionaries, primarily to nearby African countries, but also to Europe!

All that ended as the economy died under Mugabe.

Whatever the hell they've been doing, they've completely failed in their mission. By all rights, the UN should be a gathering of global resources, strategically marshaled for events just such as this.

Instead, the US picks up the world's fumble and runs with it, as usual.

Team Earth has failed us for over a hundred years, now. When are we gonna stop carrying them on our back?
