Avoiding national conscription and living off the dole come to mind.

And, yes, I am orthodox. I don’t chose, however, to dress like a 1600 Polish nobleman and live off of the welfare of my fellow Jewish citizens.

Can’t find that requirement in the Torah, Mishna, whatever.

That's a very broad brush you're using and for the record, I'm also Orthodox.

I should care what they wear. The fact is that of the Haredi in Israel, which was the original point of the article, there are many that DO serve in the military (there are Haredi units), here too btw, and there are many who do work for a living.

I'm more than a little amazed, though, that you would paint all Haredi as freeloaders when that is clearly not the case.

Are there many who do sponge off the state? Of course. Do I approve of that? No. Does that mean that ALL Haredi sponge off the State? No, it doesn't.
