I didn’t know any of that stuff was illegal?!?!?
It’s not. Not at all. He’s being held for “evaluation.” We’re all going to be “evaluated” someday.
Believe it or not: LIBERAL Massachusetts requires a permit to own firearms and pepper spray or mace:
Firearms Identification (FID) Cards
The new FID card permits the purchase, possession and carrying of NON-LARGE CAPACITY RIFLES, SHOTGUNS and AMMUNITION ONLY. You must be at least 18 years old (or 15 - 17 years old with parental consent) to apply for an FID card. The fee for an FID card is $100.00 and it is valid for 6 years. New applicants must complete a Mass. approved firearms safety course or a BASIC HUNTER EDUCATION COURSE. A restricted FID card is available solely for the possession of mace or pepper spray. Applicants for the restricted FID are exempt from the education requirement.

My advice is if you are on your way to a hunting trip or have a firearm in your vehicle bypass Massachusetts.
If he has a Class A, Large Capacity, License to Carry, here in MA, I can't see that any of what was mentioned was illegal for him to either purchase or to own.
Now he might be a cup and saucer short of a full place setting, but he hasn't done anyone any harm, even his Psychiatrist wife. And frankly, I'm suspect of what she might have to say, considering her profession, and that she practices in Cambridge. ;o)
Hubby and I took the opportunity to go ahead and get our LTCs here in MA, because frankly we weren't sure what Deval Patrick might start trying to do vis a vis individual gun ownership. We haven't even bought a handgun yet. We're gonna go to the local Pistol and Rifle range with our Firearms Safety Instructor to try out different guns. I've only ever fired an air rifle, so it's gonna be interesting and fun!
