As senators, Barack Obama and Joe Biden both opposed the troop surge in Iraq -- and Biden even wanted to divide the country into three sections.
But as vice president, Biden is taking credit for success in Iraq.
"I am very optimistic about Iraq," he said. "I mean, this could be one of the great achievements of this administration."
But Republican Sen. Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma, a member of the Armed Services Committee, said you cannot oppose the surge and then claim it for your legacy.
"When Joe Biden was in the Senate and Obama was in the Senate, they authored and were the chief architect of the resolution opposing the surge," he said.
The vice president also took credit for the troop drawdown.
"You're going to see 90,000 American troops come marching home by the end of the summer," he said. "You're going to see a stable government in Iraq that is actually moving toward a representative government."
But the drawdown was negotiated in the Status of Forces Agreement before the Obama administration took office.

Those words are far far kinder than what I want to say to them.
Victory has a thousand fathers, but defeat is an orphan. - John F. Kennedy
these people have no dignity ... shameless behavior ... honor is MIA
I think everyone is cringing over this, with the possible exception of Joe Biden. Or could this be a diabolically brilliant sinister and clever ruse to draw our attention away from Obama or to make Obama look like a genius by comparison?
They will usurp anything to their advantage so no surprise here. Hell if OwlGore invented the internet, then the Kenyan (with Sheriff Joe’s help) created the firmament. unfortunately ask the typical Joe six-pack and he would believe that what they say is true. We are doomed because of the rampant ignorance of the “american idol” populace.
Not missing... you can only miss something if you had it previously. They do not qualify.
Duplicitous morons.
Iraq was all Bush and he was willing to take the poll hit for it. These two deserve no credit for what was won before Bush left..
Now if we want to move to Afghanistan in which it has actually not remained static from Bush’s tenure but gotten progressively worse since they assumed office...
Biden’s mouth is on overdrive.

Talk radio is shredding his claim with Biden’s own words, and the One’s.
Reagan was once a Democrat so I guess we
are just going to have give them the credit
for his great presidency too.
“Talk radio is shredding his claim with Bidens own words, and the Ones.”
Yeah, I don’t think they can possibly get away with making this claim. They might be able to fool some people on pinning the bad economy on Bush, but to claim credit for success in Iraq after bashing Bush for 7 years for going in there, then opposing the winning strategy (the surge)-only complete and total morons (like Biden) could possibly credit THIS administration for those successes.
I think BO sent Biden out from desperation. It’s a Hail Mary. And this is an interception. Bad throw, Biden!
Biden and Obama have no SHAME. THEY WILL NOT EVEN ALLOW EFFECTIVE ROES in Afghanistan to allow for a victory similar to that achieved in Iraq.YET THEY CLAIM CREDIT FOR IRAQ?
They must be desperate in the face of their continued failures to govern America.
Obama and Biden’s only accomplishments are voting present or being opposed to something that succeeds and then wanting to take credit for it.
Kind of sounds like Al Gore taking credit for inventing the internet.
They have no shame.
But, but, but............its George Bush’s fault.
What a couple of sick, pathetic liars we have in the #1 and 2 positions in this country.
They are creating a massive Karma bomb for themselves that’s inevitably gonna drop on their heads.
I wish they would blame Bush for the success.
...and now, Obama is trying to steal the strategies of Bush administration (Gen Petraeus) for Iraq, and emulate it in Afghanistan.
