Congresswoman Diane Watson will hold a news conference about her future plans tomorrow in Los Angeles, according to her press secretary Lois Hill Hale.
Hill Hale wouldn't say explicitly that Watson would not seek reelection this fall to what's thought to be a safe Democratic seat, but she called tomorrow's news conference a "major announcement."
Watson, 76, represents the 33rd congressional district located in Los Angeles. She would become the 14th Democrat to announce they will not run for reelection this fall.
Watson has been a target of the right because she blamed race, in part, for opposition to health care and praised Cuban leader Fidel Castro as one of the brightest leaders I have ever met.
The district is 35 percent Hispanic, 30 percent African Americda, and 20 percent white. John Kerry and Al Gore both won CA-33 with 83 percent of the vote. Barack Obama won it with 87 percent. Watson was first elected in 2000 and won with huge margins -- 75% (00), 83% (02), 89% (04), 91% (06) and 87% (08).
The California political publication Target Book reported that Watson "will announce her retirement on Thursday and next week Asm. Karen Bass (D-AD47) will declare her candidacy for the seat with the support of Watson."

Diane assumes the classic democrat pose...

.
Such language, sir. You know, there must be some Freepers (not I, yet) who are 76 or round about that you just insulted.
OldPossum,
If you are honest you will admit that at 76 you do not have the skills you had at 36.
My inlaws are that age and I would not care to have them in charge of ANYTHING.
That does not mean that everyone who reaches 76 is ready for a shelf, it just means that it is time to slow down.
The Democrats should run an illegal alien Hispanic. There are 20 million of these people and they deserve congressional representation. Since many of these illegals already vote thanks to ACORN and SEIU and the DNC, the alien should have no problem getting elected.
No, this is NOT SARC
as far as I am concerned I would support Felton Newell over
Karen Bass in the primary ... need more details about Newell.
Hope somebody else jumps in. the hispanic vote is
up for grabs.
Karen Bass, candidate for CA-33: We are delighted with
todays State Supreme Court ruling allowing marriage
equality in California. It is a true testament to advancing
equality and to recognizing the right of all Californians
to build a future with the person they love. We recently
lost Mildred Loving, the woman whose marriage to a man of
another race ushered in the Supreme Court ruling that made
marriage colorblind. Todays ruling is another important
reminder that love will overcome.
Your argument is conceded. It’s just that one should not call his elders “relics.” Not nice. That’s all I was saying.
You are right ya old fart.
