CA Rep. likely won't run for re-election (Diane Watson, D)

Congresswoman Diane Watson will hold a news conference about her future plans tomorrow in Los Angeles, according to her press secretary Lois Hill Hale.

Hill Hale wouldn't say explicitly that Watson would not seek reelection this fall to what's thought to be a safe Democratic seat, but she called tomorrow's news conference a "major announcement."

Watson, 76, represents the 33rd congressional district located in Los Angeles. She would become the 14th Democrat to announce they will not run for reelection this fall.

Watson has been a target of the right because she blamed race, in part, for opposition to health care and praised Cuban leader Fidel Castro as “one of the brightest leaders I have ever met.”

The district is 35 percent Hispanic, 30 percent African Americda, and 20 percent white. John Kerry and Al Gore both won CA-33 with 83 percent of the vote. Barack Obama won it with 87 percent. Watson was first elected in 2000 and won with huge margins -- 75% (00), 83% (02), 89% (04), 91% (06) and 87% (08).

The California political publication Target Book reported that Watson "will announce her retirement on Thursday and next week Asm. Karen Bass (D-AD47) will declare her candidacy for the seat with the support of Watson."

Doubtful. I don’t think a Republican could win that seat under any circumstances.

Look at those percentages: that’s got to be a safe Democrat seat—even in 2010!

I don’t pretend to know the why of it, but getting rid of her would be excellent.

With the dem's numbers like 75% (00), 83% (02), 89% (04), 91% (06) and 87% (08), unfortunately, looks like you're right.

It could be an interesting race if the right conservative minority candidate would enter the race.

With those past victory margins? Hardly. This is a safe Dem seat and they'll find a like-minded Democrat to fill it.

I am happy to see this hideous woman out, but we won’t have a chance in that district and may get something worse.

She’s the Maxine Waters twin and the voters in her district loves her.

she was facing a primary from Newell

if a pro-family Hispanic ran in the DEM PRIMARY, conservatives would be too dumb to finance his race.

The primary is in June. It could be a wasted opportunity again. This guy deserves a challenge ... but he’s not running as the total loon Castro-supporting lefty.

I know Diane Watson, and know the district she reprsents. It is basically central City of Los Angeles, and it is definitely safe Dem unless something beyond extraordinary happens. It’s one of those districts that doesn’t even need to be Gerrymandered to make it safe Dem.

There is no such thing in that district. I expect at least one Mexican-American Dem to run for the seat. Not sure about blacks, as as the Mexicans have been displacing them in what was once a black stronghold. No matter who the Republican candidate turns out to be (if there even will be one), I can guarantee you people on this forum would consider him/her to be a "RINO."

“It could be an interesting race if the right conservative minority candidate would enter the race.”

This being the midterm, Dr. Alan Keyes is available.

(He runs for President or Senator on Presidential years, since 1988)
