C. Hayes WGNTV NEWS February 10, 2010
A magnitude 4.3 earthquake hit northern Illinois early Wednesday morning.
The quake struck at 3:59 a.m. in Sycamore in DeKalb County. The quake could be felt as far away as Chicago... 50 miles from the epicenter.
We'll have more information as it becomes available.
For the latest information, go to the U.S. Geological Survey website.

My thoughts exactly.
The New Madrid Fault Line goes right up through the middle of the USA and these little quakes could be the signals of a really BIG one. :-O

Lots of unreinforced bricks and mortar in Chicago- if anything big ever did strike near by the city would fall down.

"Well, look at it this way. An earthquake in Chicago is like a tornado in California."
Actually, we have a few of those out here. Last month a twister appeared on the eastern part of Contra Costa County.
Our oldest son, DIL and grandkids live very near to where this photo was taken. Our grand daughter was at a party and the host parents got a call from one of their mothers telling them to go to their second floor to watch the funnel cloud.

Too far north for New Madrid, I believe.
I’m approx. a little south of the “wa” in Milwaukee, but didn’t feel anything. Of course, I do have an almost Dane-sized dog who shakes the house when she goes up and down the stairs, so could have mistaken it for her...

4.3? Childs play... Not entirely. With equal energy release, a quake with deep soils overlaying it can result in more damage to man-made structures than a quake surrounded largely by rock.

Gosh .. thanks, jonny. I just heard about
it on the news break .. didn’t know about
it or feel a thing. Guess it was a 4.something.
Weird weather .. weird times. God bless and
protect us all.

You just proved my point. ;)
That's a puny tornado too. LOL!

I’m in SW Dane Co and didn’t feel it. But just explained in another post that I have an almost Dane-sized dog who probably sets off about 4.00 on the richter scale when she goes up and down the stairs (and sometimes bounds through the house), so I might have mistaken it for her.
That, or I slept right through it.

Bush’s fault.
Women and minorities most affected.

The fault systems in northern Illinois are not as well understood as those in other regions where earthquakes are more common, and more investigation will be needed to determine the cause of this mornings temblor, Vaughan said. Atlas couldn't get along with Gaia any more and he shrugged?

Listening to Rush.....the bottom of the hour news just announced the epicenter was in Gilbert, Illinois.....which I never heard of, and the reporterette must have realized the town's "unknown-ness" because she immediately said it was near Elgin.
Someone upthread mentioned this quake was a shaker, not a roller. This is correct. The one about 20-some years ago was a roller that caused a wave of nausea to come over me as I was ironing.

In response to your # 75, Cohan evidently gave a lengthy press conference to announce and explain his withdrawal. I understand he held it in a tavern. His son cried and sobbed all the way through the ordeal.
Cohen came under much criticism for subjecting his son to such upset and media glare.
Typical low-class Dem city-scum.

Hey, my son lives in Fitchburg! (Recently returned from deployment to Iraq, just started his final semester at UW-Mad.)
I'm sure he was asleep at the time of the earthquake but I'll ask him about it.:)

Central, here, lot of farm land here too.
I think the epicenter hit in a strange location,
That cannot be part of the NM, can it?
