With 96 percent of districts reporting in the special election for the 89th State Assembly seat along Westchester County eastern corridor, Republican Bob Castelli has received a landslide 56-44% landslide victory against Democrat Peter Harckham.
For New York, for Westchester, for Republicans and for taxpayers exasperated with business as usual in Albany -- tonight was the game changer.
"It's a shot across the bow to people like Sheldon Silver and entrenched bosses," said Castelli in his victory speech.
Joining Castelli as a big winner tonight is Westchester County Republican Chairman Doug Colety, whose winning streak in this former Democratic bastion (whose registration edge is still overwhelmingly Democrat) demonstrates to the rest of New York that Republicans can win anywhere.
Also a big winner is newly elected Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, whose team came through to help Castelli.
More important, the presence of tea party activists across the mid and lower Hudson Valley during this special election couldn't be missed -- though the renewed organization and new enthusiasm of a dozen local political committees in this Assembly district in the Republican, Conservative and Independence parties brought dozens of new volunteers and leaders to the fray.
This was clearly a grass-roots effort and indicative of things to come in New York State.
This is good news.
Go, Tea Partiers!
Gotta love it!
Who’s up for the special election for Murtha’s seat? Think the Pubbies have a chance at taking it?
Good news from Westchester County, New York. Hopefully the harbinger of things to come.
Not everyone in Westchester is rich, but it’s mostly rich and successful people who live there.
I can remember as a boy when what you might call the WASP Establishment was pretty conservative. Then it got more and more liberal. Now it looks as if these folks might be waking up and saying, “Now, wait a minute, why am I voting for these jerks?”
At least, I hope so.
Then they mocked us.
They they fought us.
Then we won,VA, NJ, and MA.
Excellent chance. Russell came very close to unseating Murtha in 2008 and he is running again.
thanks Clintonfatigued
I live here and I ain’t rich- but I got a nice house...
Castelli is a Vietnam Vet and his son is Special Ops in the Army:

THey ignore us at their own peril.
If we could win that district in Queens where the ‘Rat sent a mailer with a swastika against a Jewish opponent, the triumph would be complete.
What in the world were they thinking.....unbelievable!
It looks as though yet another Weprin will be representing NE Queens, however.
I see this (3rd Dist) was held by a “Working Families” candidate (obviously also the de facto Democrat). We last won the seat in 1994 & 1996, but that lady switched to the Democrats immediately after in 1997. Before that, we last won it for a single term in 1988.
Nope. Weprin is currently winning with 62% of the vote, and most have called the election for him already.
That is a special election for the New York City Council somewhere in Queens. I hope that mailer backfires in all directions.
The loss of the 89th is also an embarrassment for the Dems, because this seat was vacated by Adam Bradley, who was just elected Mayor of White Plains. Most of the surrounding districts are a sea of Democrats. Although the district may have been reconfigured, we last won this Assembly seat in 1990.
Woo Hoo ... fabulous !
