Debra Medina Surges in TX Gov race
Politico ^ | 10th Feb | Andy Barr

Tea party-backed candidate Debra Medina is closing on Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison in Texas’s Republican gubernatorial primary, increasing the odds the race led by Gov. Rick Perry will be thrown into a runoff.

According to a survey out Tuesday by Public Policy Polling, Medina, a nurse who’s now a businesswoman, had the support of 24 percent of likely Republican primary voters, trailing the three-term senator by only 4 percentage points. Perry, who leads Hutchison by double-digits in several polls, got 39 percent in the latest survey.

If no candidate gets more than 50 percent of the vote in the March 2 primary, the top two finishers will compete in a runoff on April 13.

Medina’s biggest obstacle as I see it is that there are 21 days to the primary and Early Voting begins in 7 days. Not a lot of time to change things around with only a few dollars in a state as big as Texas is and the varying media markets.

Interestingly from the poll she only has a 40% favorability number with 9% unfavorable and 51% unsure. That’s not in her favor with the short time left. jmo.

There’s no chance that she will come in first. But if she knocks KBH out of the race and there is a run-off, then everyone is going to become aware of her pretty quickly.

I must say, I’m delighted to see that KBH seems to be doing so badly. Between her and Perry, I would certainly choose Perry. She has a ton of name recognition, but she has been moving steadily to the left over the years and now is little more than a RINO opportunist.

She has always been in third place for the GOP Governor’s Primary.

I’d love to see her and Governor Good-hair in a run-off. She is a true Conservative and she is loved by the Tea Party Nation.

Granted KBH has been struggling to get anything going in this primary and time is rapidly coming to an end. Her challeng is to get the moderate voter out to the polls and that isn’t a certainity in a primary. If the turnout gets over the 700,000 number and maybe upwards of 725,000+ then I think that helps her. We’ll see. In 06 it was 655,000.

myself also ... (well almost)

In general, Perry is probably preferable to KBH - he’s just been their too long. Too much entrenched crony-ism - Sure, KBH will have her cronies too, but new cronies are inherently less powerful than old ones. His TxDOT people are operating as a virtual rogue government right now - and the legislature is too weak to fight them.

I’m going to back and contribute to Medina, but I’ll be voting KBH (on a pure “term limit” concept) if the run-off is Perry/KBH

She is surging in the sense that a few weeks ago she was polling at 4% and then she mopped the floor with the other two in the debates and people are responding to that.

They weren’t even planning on having her participate in the debates until enough Freepers burned up the phone lines.

Perry has been trying to get more authority and money for “boots on the ground” for police forces empowered and mannded to control the border, he’s used the authority he’s got to enforce immigration and deportation. However, States are limited by the Federal forces and laws. lmarie373’s source hates Perry, but even he has documented Perry’s border efforts back in 2005 http://24ahead.com/blog/archives/004096.html
In 2007, he set up the Border Security Council http://www.texasinsider.org/?p=320
In 2009, he sent Texas Rangers and asked for Federal troops
http://www.aolnews.com/story/texas-gov-rick-perry-sends-rangers-to/666047

I’d sure like to see what legislation Medina has testified for at Austin, much less managed to get legislators to sign. When has she sat in committee meetings for half a day, waiting her turn to speak? What has she lobbied for? When has she worked for anything other than to build opposition to the Republicans by forming the Campaign for Liberty, Texas Liberty Campaign, and her own campaigns?

Did she chase the Dems to Oklahoma or New Mexico in 2003? Did she join FReepers in any of our protests over the 2000 Bush challenge or over the fleeing Dems in 2003?

i dont think calling a surge to third place any kind of achievement means much...i’ve always been a perry fan and thought he was against illegals.

Did she preside over a grotesque increase in spending? Did she help push through the margins tax? Did she come with an Orwellian scheme to force the whore vaccine on 11 year-olds? Did she push the TTC? Is she pushing toll roads, the net effect of which is that productive people get to pay another tax for a service that the state should provide (roads)etc. so that there is more money in the general fund for welfare benefits to our so-called poor and illegals and for shoveling more cash into the hands of those who are responsible for the failed government schools?, etc. Moreover, everyone who pays attention knows that last time around Perry ran as a border enforcer and then afterwards mocked the idea of a fence. He has not done what he should on the border. He is better than KBH, and I will vote for him in the final if he is the candidate, but let’s not kid ourselves. He is close to a RINO.

He did all that to fight the “crime” that the flood of illegals was causing. Not the crime of them coming. He’s a “let’s arrest and deport the criminals” type. As opposed to lets stop the damn flood of illegals. And trust me, he was NOT treating all illegals as criminals. He was dead set against the border fence that would actually STOP the invasion.

He was 1000% on board with Say Daily MushandSpin killing the border fence.

For starters look up Debra Medina's column 'Latinos and the GOP'

'It’s a shame isn’t it, that Republicans continue to ignore Hispanics especially here in Texas?' Debra Medina

'Ignore them', Mrs Medina? Since when? What more do you want? Or shouldn't we ask?

Medina ad:

“Who is going to think more about Latino families? Rick Perry, Kay Bailey Hutchison or me, who has a Latino family?” (Medina’s cultural heritage is German and Bohemian.)

She told a colleague last month in an e-mail. “Being married, however, to someone with a Mexican American heritage, I certainly embrace the culture.” But before she explained that, she told my colleage, who had asked her whether she considers herself Latina: “I’d not consider myself anything other than a wife and mother, a nurse and a patriot. I believe we too often get into race when it’s immaterial.”

No, Thanks, Mrs Medina.

She is also running Spanish ads. Hello Mrs.Medina! If they cannot speak English then they have no business voting IMO. When they learn English then let them vote. Assimilate. Learn English. Appreciate all America gives you.

So I’m sure she is blowing a lot of hot air just like Obama did just to get elected. Running those ads and saying what she has, tells me the border issue is just a try to get votes for herself.

Medina is about as qualified to be Governor as zero was to be President- want to re-visit how that is working out? She's a Libertarian running on the Republican ticket. She is supported by the Ron Paul worship crowd and she herself has acted in the Ron Paul worship capacity. She has demonstrated a lack of knowledge about Texas law and current ballot initiatives.

No, thanks, I’ll stick with ‘ol RINO Perry. Texas has remained in better shape than almost any if not all of the states in the union under Perry's watch. As someone said, 'he's the devil we know'.

The motly crew running for governor is laughable; a MUSLIM, a trecherous RINO woman* (Hutchison) and a woman with questionable loyalties

*Feds Have Built Only 32 Miles of 700 Mile Double-Border Fence Originally Mandated by Congress “One reason DHS has been able to do this is an amendment that Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R.-Texas) slipped into an omnibus appropriations bill that Congress passed on December 18, 2007. Hutchison’s amendment put a loophole in the fence law that allowed the secretary of Homeland Security not to build the fence Congress had mandated the year before.”

KBH is a sellout. She knew there were NASA employees being wrongfully accused of federal crimes and said she would try and help them. She helped all right. She contacted the Houston news paper and told them to stop reporting on the issue. This cost people their freedom as well as marriages, children and jobs. Shame on you KBH.

There’s no such thing as a “whore vaccine.” If you know any woman or girl who has had an abnormal pap smear leading to “freezing” or laser therapy or cervical cancer, you know a woman who most likely could have been helped by the vaccine to the four most common strains of Human Papilloma Virus in the US. The same viruses are passed from mother to baby at birth and can cause life-threatening lung disease in children. They’re also the cause of at least 40% of lung cancer in non-smokers - we’ll probably find that the percentage should be higher and is the actual cause of lung cancer in smokers.

The point is where is Medina’s own history of positive action? *What has* Medina actually done that so many of us FReepers do all the time - take action in addition to talking? Where’s her testimony for a bill? Has she ever been able to convince her own legislators that they should pass a difficult bill? Where’s the record of her walking the walk of activism for an Republican Party Platform plank? How’s the health and strength of the Wharton County Republican Party?

I’m glad to read that you’ll support the Party’s candidate after the primary. That’s what primaries are for: so we can fight over *our* candidates, but come together on that final candidate (I wish Medina would promise us the same thing, out of faith in our judgment.)

I remember Perry’s attempts to increase State involvement in defense of the border, asking for Border Patrol and troops to supplement our Sheriffs and Rangers. He’s been mocked about attempting to get cameras in remote areas of our 1200+ mile border with Mexico and now, he’s asking for the same Predators used in Arizona.
