February 9, 2010 We're Living In Broken Britain, Say Most Voters
Peter Riddell
Voters are deeply pessimistic about the state of Britain today, believing that society is broken and heading in the wrong direction, a Populus poll for The Times has found. Nearly three fifths of voters say that they hardly recognise the country they are living in, while 42 per cent say they would emigrate if they could.
But worries over the pace of social change and dislocation are balanced by the belief that life will get better, according to the survey undertaken at the weekend. It suggests that 70 per cent believe that society is now broken, echoing a Conservative campaign theme of the past two years, while 68 per cent say people who play by the rules get a raw deal and 82 per cent think it is time for a change.
The snapshot of Britain also confirms, however, that the battle between the parties has tightened with Labour two points up at 30 per cent. Women, working-class people and Tory voters were more likely to say that they hardly recognise their own country.
Overall, 64 per cent think that Britain is going in the wrong direction and just 31 per cent believe it is on the right track. This is a widely used measure of mood in the United States where 57 per cent of people think America is going wrong and 37 per cent believe it is on the right track.
It is not all gloom. Three fifths (60 per cent) of those polled say they look to the future with optimism, against 38 per cent who are looking forward with anxiety. While 45 per cent say Britains best years are behind us, 50 per cent say that they are still to come.

Not quite. We've got:
1. Guns
2. The Tea Party
3. Libs and RINOs on the run
Thankfully, we're still far behind Britain in the downward spiral.
Thanks for the post.
Like it or not, Britian and the US are linked in many ways ... and unfortunately, if they go down then they can drag us with them. Ditto if we go down.
Culturally, there are aspects of British culture demise which I do not think (or at least I hope) will not come “across the pond”:
1. Loss of Judeo Christian Heritage - Britian has less than 5% church attendance; while the US culture is going down fast (based on the latest Stupor Bowl underware commercials), I don’t think we as far along the “throw-out-Christians-now” path as Britain is. (Throwing-out our Creator is usually the last step before cultural collapse).
2. Gun Ownership - we got’em, Britians can’t get’em. It may be a deciding factor in the protection of Constitutional freedoms.
3. Big Brother on Every Corner - British “subjects” know they are being watched, listened to, recorded, inspected. The same may already be happening over here, but at least we don’t have the mandatory-shoulder-mount-mini-cam-feeling (yet).
4. Loss of Perspective / Loss of Fundamental Truth - when you read the British papers, you can sense the “deadness” of the soul of the country. Rarely do you “see the light”. It is more common to find light blasting out the darkness here in the US ... at least this is my perception.
5. Over-run by Political Correctness. Well, it may be too late for the US on this point. I fear our cow-tow to anti-common-sense PC may be just as great as Britian’s. Huge blind-spots now exist in the gov charged with protecting us.
But be of good cheer, The Great I AM is going to sort all this out ... shortly!
I know what you mean and I’m sad when I see what is happening to Britain, not just because they are our closest ally, but because we are on the same path, and just a little behind.
Friend, you've got my positive thoughts and very best wishes for that outcome. I hope like hell that y'all get that thing flipped.
I lived in East Grinstead, West Sussex for about a year, a couple of decades back, and have a special place in my heart for England. I've got Brit, Scot, and Irish roots all over my family tree, so I'm pulling for you, cousin.
Target rich environment. And then send the remaining uzzzlims back to their own cesspool countries that they orginally came from.
Of course, it has absolutely nothing to do with this... right?
“But worries over the pace of social change and dislocation are balanced by the belief that life will get better...”
I bet you say that to all of your slaves, Mr. Tyrant.
I'm English and what really got to me was that when I got married to a foreign lady back in 1995, my wife and I had to jump through all sorts of hoops and attend interviews (more like interregations) separately and together to justify our wedding and prove we married for love rather than just to get her into Britain.
I wondered after reading those reports whether the fact that she was Polish and white may have had something to do with that. Maybe I should just have married a muslim girl and converted and no questions would have been asked.
Anti British? That’s ridiculous! I only know 3 couples and they are the outspoken “anti” people. I hope if I chose to go to another country where I can work and make a living, that I have the courtesy to be humble and the common sense to be greatful. These people are neither. And it strikes the wrong chord when a group we helped defend cuts down or mocks our military.
Guests in our country should show some appreciation and gratitude for a system that built a country great enough to host them. If not, the only deserved “anti” label is anti American.

This article will make you weep.
The socialist experiment has removed all vestiges of *Toil, sweat and tears* that made the British people strong and self-reliant. sod;(
Damn. That's shockingly high for an industrialized nation.
