February 6, 2010 Tea Party Turns Nasty: Its Our Country Lets Take It Back
Sarah Palin is due to address the Tea Party Convention in Nashville tonight
Tim Reid in Nashville
They will proudly boast of how they have galvanised ordinary Americans against runaway government spending, but a dark underbelly of xenophobia has been exposed at the first national gathering of the Tea Party movement.
Here in the vast Gaylord resort in Nashville, where 600 members of the conservative grassroots phenomenon that exploded in revolt against President Obamas economic policies have gathered, it would be advisable not to wear a T-shirt declaring I am an illegal immigrant.
The anti-Government, anti-Establishment movement, which has splintered in the past week with many boycotting this gathering, has billed itself as a revolution born of the widespread disgust at Washington and the way that the nations politicians are bankrupting Americas future.
With its raucous protests it has undeniably become a political force that threatens to hand Democrats a disastrous midterm election night in November. Voter anger against spending and debt, of which the Tea Partiers are in the vanguard, played a significant role in the recent loss of the late Edward Kennedys Senate seat and could conceivably lead to Democrats losing the House and Senate.
Yet the speech that opened the Nashville event yesterday, an address greeted with whoops and cheers from the mainly white audience, reflects a movement that also appears to have a less attractive side to it.

"Extremists Come To The Fore At Tea Party Rally"!
It is not XENOPHOBIA, if you are here illegally.
Too much Oxford, not enough Georgia Tech.
...I happen to believe that anglo-european/judeo christian values and culture made this country great...if that makes me a xenophobe, I don’t care.
I wonder what they said about that first tea party back in 1776?
Likely, it was something very similar.
He was great in "WKRP in Cincinnati".
The London Times states in its main portal to the URL (www.londontimes.uk.co)
that “Extremists Come To The Fore At Tea Party Rally”!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Well, well, well, if just isn’t a YANKY DOODLE DANDY :)
Sounds like what the London newspapers said in 1773.
I know-——maybe The Times should be reminded of the “extremists” that voted in MA a couple of weeks ago.
When did being a fuddy-duddy conservative become radical and extremist? (I kinda like it!)
Very good riposte.
XENOPHOBIA is Globalese for NATIVIST which is Beltwayian for RACIST which is the local version of the perjorative.
And this effete London Times windbag is so yesterday.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find only things evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelogus
london paper is goodier than corncob~~~~
Meanwhile I assume this paper is largely silent over the Islamic extremists in England who carry signs proclaiming death to the infidels, support for terrorism, and the promise that England will fall.
Goodness! Sounds like massa gettin’ nervous!
Very good reply to the snotty Brit fish wrapper.
Bollocks to them!
All we're saying is, if you don't bother to get your passport stamped, "employment and recourse to public funds NOT PERMITTED" in the USA.
