Woes Beset Illinois Democrats
Wall Street Journal ^ | February 4, 2010 | DOUGLAS BELKIN

Two days after the nation's first midterm primary, Illinois Democrats are staggering into the young election season weakened by a contentious campaign, lukewarm support for their nominees and news their candidate for lieutenant governor has an arrest record.

Topping the list of woes for Democrats is Scott Lee Cohen, a pawnbroker and political neophyte who pumped $2 million of his own money into a campaign to win the party's nomination for lieutenant governor.

The day after the election, big headlines in Chicago's newspapers said that in October 2005, Mr. Cohen's then live-in girlfriend called the police and accused him of holding a knife to her throat during an argument.

On Thursday, Gov. Pat Quinn said his new running mate should consider withdrawing from the race. Mr. Cohen beat out five other candidates to win the primary and, while Democrats can pressure him, they can't force him off the ticket.

Can Quinn resign from the ticket and run 3rd party (a la Adlai Stevenson a few years ago)? Illinois might have passed a sore loser law in the mean time...

Having lived outside of Chi-town as a boy when the ‘River Wards’ voted their dead in mass to win the Presidency for JFK in 1960, the thought that the big bad Daley Machine might have hit a shudder point in all of their rampant sleaze makes me happy. However, the election is in November and they are nothing if not masters of their political universe! It is not the Confederacy that will rise again, it is the River Wards! Over and over and over ...

Are you suggesting that Mark Kirk, who supports partial birth abortion, is an instrument of God?

Oh my, Scott Brown winning Teddy the Swimmer's seat was terrific, but if Mark Kirk wins Obama's old seat, that would just be SCHWEET!!

They may not be conservatives, but they ARE Republicans, and can help create the numbers to bring us back into a majority. Other areas of the country will have an easier time getting conservatives into office. In MA and IL, you're not going to get a real conservative, because the overall population isn't going to support that. We do what we can.

mmm, idk about a anything divine, but some of the rumors floating around suggest maybe he is an instrument of Sodom. I hope we don’t have another Mark Foley on our hands. Has he staked out a position on DODT?

Have they heard of checking the candidates first before they allow the nomination to go through. Obama was never properly vetted by the Illinois democratic Party. he utilized another name Barry Soetoro, in getting his law license in Illinois he stated he never used another name AKA also known as. His connections with radicals. His connection with the socialist democratic party, and many of his other illegal or illicit activities. what about the drug arrest? what about the pakistan trip with either the british or indonesian passport. or was it a passport issued to someone else. what about the number of social security numbers that barry or is it barack utilized. it has become the staus quo in Illinois to be a crook.. Seems that in Illinois you run for two terms - one term in office and another term in the federal pen.

Kirk may not be a perfect conservative but we HAVE TO BEAT Obama’s buddy Giannoulias. This is the most crucial sentate race in the entire country. Anyone who cares about this country has to get behind Kirk.

The Democrats nationally face a tough environment, but Illinois in particular is very bad for them. The Blago trial is set to start this summer and Rowdy Rod is ticked off that his party abandoned him. He wants to bring them all down with him. Quinn was bloodied and weakened by Hynes in the Dem primary for governor. Giannoulias has problems with his family’s bank which nearly cost him the Senate primary. I think the Republicans have an excellent chance to win Obama’s seat along with a couple of House seats.
