WASHINGTON -- The number of newly laid-off workers filing initial claims for jobless benefits rose unexpectedly last week, evidence that layoffs are continuing and jobs remain scarce.
The rise is the fourth in the past five weeks. Most economists hoped that claims would resume a downward trend that was evident in the fall and early winter.

“Unexpectedly”? Since when is the steadily rising unemployment numbers “uninspected”? Businesses have no prospects of hiring, the people they have now can take care of all the essential duties to maintain the reduced revenue flows of the enterprise, and the only way to remain profitable, is either to reduce costs through demanding more of the remaining employees, or by releasing still more employees.
ANY employee has to be earning more for the business, than is paid out in salary and benefits, to justify retention of an existing position, or a new hire. If a business is not making a profit, it soon expires.
