EU summit off after Obama 'snub'
The European Union has scrapped a summit with the US, after President Barack Obama decided not to attend.
The event in Madrid in May was to have been the highlight of Spain's six-month EU presidency, and the cancellation is seen as a humiliating blow.
Officials say the summit may be take place later this year.
BBC European affairs correspondent Oana Lungescu says many see Mr Obama's decision as a snub to the EU's hopes of boosting its global role.
On Tuesday, the White House said Mr Obama had had no plans to attend the event, and aides pointed out he had visited Europe six times in 2009.
Mr Obama attended US-EU summits in Prague and Washington last year.
A Spanish official quoted by AP news agency said Madrid had assumed Mr Obama would be attending the event.
In fact, Spain only found out about Mr Obama's decision through the press.

Obama has managed to insult almost every country in Europe at this point. England, France, Germany, Poland, Italy, Denmark, and now Spain. And I’m sure a few more that I haven’t heard about.

Being european myself, i would say that hussein obama is not as well thought of. It seems his halo has lost its shine.

Last I checked, the U.S. is not part of the EU. Verify please?
Spain does not award Nobel prizes...nor are they slated to host Olympic games any time soon. There’s your answer.
I will bet money he changes his mind. I can’t believe he would pass up a chance to strengthen any group that had as its goal the challenge of U.S. dominance.
He has too many problems at home. This guy is way in over his head. Listened to him talk to the Dems today and I have never heard so much babbling in all my life. He talked forever and said absolutely nothing. Amazing gift he has.
OK we are a lefty/liberal bunch (in the main) over here - but if anything the Great One should want to encourage that! We will be Eurabia within two generations. So I cannot see reason for the snub - he had the EU in his thrall and seems to be wasting the capital!?
