I remember Dan Coats. I like him much better than Dick Lugar. One thing I liked about Dan was his thing being against East Coast trash coming to Indiana. This would be an interesting race. I think it is long overdue for Evan bayh to be fired. All I remember of him is he was a carpetbagger from Washington DC when he ran for Indiana governor. He tried to conjure an image of being conservative especially knowing what happened to Daddy. But since he has been in Washington, his true colors has come out.
On Mitch Daniels, I think he would be better for a run as POTUS.

i say get hostettler into bayh’s seat, wait until 2012 and have mitch kick lugar to the curb and get pence in the governors office. in the meantime we must also get rid of brad ellsworth. i vote for sending him to siberia or feeding him to the animals at the indy zoo, but that’s just me.

I always liked Dan Coats. He’s a solid conservative and he kept his campaign promises when he made it to the Senate.
As for retiring in 1998...it’s probably true that the ascendancy of Bayh played a factor. Evan (for reasons that mystify me to this day) was enormously popular in Indiana and would have been tough to beat.
At the same time, though, Coats has long been an advocate of term limits and spoke about moving on more than one occasion during his Senate years. I’m of the opinion that he would likely have retired even without a strong challenger. I would also speculate that if he does challenge and defeat Bayh this November, he’ll choose to serve for only one term.
