Gingrich: I was wrong to endorse Scozzafava By Eric Zimmermann - 02/01/10 03:42 PM ET
Newt Gingrich says he regrets endorsing Dede Scozzafava in the hotly contested primary for the NY-23 congressional district in November.
Scozzafava was criticized by many national Republicans for being too liberal. She eventually dropped out of the race and endorsed Democrat Bill Owens, who eeked out a victory.
"She turned out to be a huge disappointment, and she turned out not to be frankly a loyal Republican," Gingrich told an interviewer in New Hampshire this weekend.
The former speaker added that conservatives who criticized his endorsement at the time "had the better of that argument."
Gingrich said he didn't realize how "radical" Scozzafava was when he endorsed her. Conservatives lambasted her for supporting gay marriage and card check, among other liberal positions.
"She had some positions that were far more radical than I realized at the time, and I think in retrospect it was probably a mistake," he said.

Too little and way too late. Go away Newt. We have other candidates for 2012.
He didn't actually admit it was a mistake!
Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa
Why can’t this guy just go away?!
I remember back when I liked him..
Go to the light Mr. Newt..go to the light.
He also need to apologize for his Global Warming debate with John Fraud Kerry.
Why the heck not?
What was the endorsement based on?
Why does Sean Hannity have him on so often.
If he was so dense that he didn't notice how radical Scozzafava was, his judgment is certainly very defective. How can we trust him now? Which of course is the entire purpose of his bogus apology. He only wants to get back into the limelight again and possibly into the White House. How stupid does he think we are?
“She had some positions that were far more radical than I realized at the time, and I think in retrospect it was probably a mistake,” he said.

Deja Vu .. all over again.
Is he talking about Hillary, Nancy, or his first wife?
Why won’t he just go away?
Turned out?!!!! What did Newt know, and when did he get his first clue?
Shut up and go away, Newt.
More. I want MORE groveling.
Gingrich seems to be backtracking on many subjects today. I wonder why?
You just noticed, Newt? You sent out messengers on ponies to discover the truth, hunting high and low all over the district, and they only just reported back to you now?
That’s funny, thousands of us knew what she stood for even back when you endorsed her and helped the RNCC defeat the Conservative candidate.
