As food distribution improves, Haitians want U.S to 'take over'

PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI -- International relief organizations backed by American soldiers delivered hundreds of tons of rice to homeless residents of the Haitian capital Sunday, laboring to ease a food shortage that has left countless thousands struggling to find enough to eat.

But even as food-aid workers enjoyed their most successful day since the Jan. 12 earthquake, the increasingly prominent role of U.S. troops and civilians in the capital is creating high expectations that the Obama administration is struggling to contain.

The needs are extraordinary, and the common refrain is that the Americans will provide.

"I want the Americans to take over the country. The Haitian government can't do anything for us," said Jean-Louis Geffrard, a laborer who lives under a tarp in the crowded square. "When we tell the government we're hungry, the government says, 'We're hungry, too.' "

I thought we were supposed to be the unholy "invaders" - at least according to the French, that is. Maybe they're just in a snit because a British sparkling wine beat French champagne in a blind taste-test?

Haitian American Peggy Joseph shared the same sentiment during the election of 2008 when she said:

“Obama is gonna pay my mortgage and put gas in my car”

These people just want to be taken care of - i.e. total welfare.

Let’s just hope that they keep saying, The Americans, and not bHo, when they praise who’s helping them. WE’RE paying for it, and American military is distributing-=—bHo is only signing the work order.

Perfect Democrats.

Obama is no doubt organizing an ACORN delegation toute suite.

After President Reagan liberated Grenada, the other Caribbean countries were elated, and some talked of a desire to affiliate formally with the USA.

In Haiti's case self government just hasn't worked out very well after 200 years of trying, being pretty well left alone to work it out for themselves and failing.

The U.S. needs to stop all aid to Haiti until they released the 10 American Hostages they are holding.

Dumb evangelicals should stop trying to smuggle Haitians into America. Dumb Catholic charities pushing for more Somlais. I sick of churches colluding to bring in more illegals to fill their pews and I am a Christian - I don’t want to pay for illegals.

The reality is that where there are US Army and/or Marines, there is order, and thanks to US military logistics, there are supplies.

The Hatians see this. They aren’t used to seeing competence in action, and few things in this world are as competent as the battle-hardened US military. Even Obama hasn’t managed to degrade that in a mere year, albeit not for lack of trying.

As to the French, if you read between the lines, they do have a legit beef: Hillary’s flight (to be Zero’s presence there for the PR value) forced three hours of diversion of essential flights away from the Hatian capital on the third day after the earthquake. That included a French hospital flight that could have done some real good. I’m sure from their perspective, it looked like the US was putting political theater above real relief efforts. Sadly, with the obamanation in charge, they were correct. Even more sadly, the US military was acting under orders, so they had no choice but to execute their orders.

Unfortunately, we can’t afford to do another round of nation building right now. Even if we could, the obamanation would certainly screw it up. That means Hati will go back to being Hati, a corrupt African cesspool.

What a sad sad state of affairs all around...

I've read this thread and I'm having a hard time making some of the comments rational.
The church group had no business being down there with the intent to take children out of the country illegally. They have laws and that group did not have any right to take it upon themselves to kidnap children off of the street. Now they will have to pay the price for their crime.
The people of Haiti are hungry, hurting and scared. They look at our country as the land of dreams. Can someone blame them for wanting to be able to eat and have some kind of security for their families??? I do not think we should take over their country and I don't think we should bring them here. I do understand their situation and their desperation. Having compasion for starving people who have lost evrything doesn't cost us a cent.
