Candidate was acquitted of killing Iraqis (NC 7th)

WILMINGTON, N.C., Jan. 28 (UPI) -- A former U.S. Marine officer acquitted of killing two Iraqis announced Thursday he is a candidate for Congress in North Carolina.

Ilario Pantano plans to seek the Republican nomination in the seventh district, now represented by Democrat Mike McIntyre, WECT-TV in Wilmington reported.

"Anybody's background in a political race is fair game," Pantano said. "My life has been more dramatic and kinetic than any other candidate's."

After his acquittal five years ago, Pantano wrote a memoir, "Warlord." He has also been a commodity trader for Goldman Sachs.

Will Breazeale, who was defeated by McIntyre two years ago, is also running in the May primary. He said he thinks Pantano's past will help McIntyre, that the Democrats "will have a field day with it."

"That's why I continue to believe I'm the best and strongest candidate who has the best chance of beating McIntyre," he said.

Was Pantano one of the marines thrown under the bus by Murtha?

After looking through past articles on Pantano, it appears my question is answered.

How rich would it be for Pantano to get elected to Congress on the same day Murtha got thrown out?

Wonder what “our guy” will say about this? Hope he is behind the scenes supporting him. ;*)

Sorry...just now saw your reply. Glad you found the answer to your question. Although Illario was not one of the Haditha Marines, I wouldn't be surprised to learn al-Murthawi was agitating behind the scenes to prosecute him.

Mmmmm mmmmm mmmmm! I would NEVER ask God for another thing! I've got a huge smile on my face just thinking about that scenario. ;*)))

Methinks our guy will be happy to get involved. We’ll have to fill him in.

You may already be familiar with this, but just to test my imperfect memory (with article links from FR searches)...

Lt. Pantano was involved in a separate incident that involved a standing vehicle and two insurgents. I believe a disgruntled subordinate had issues with Pantano and made his life more difficult during investigation.

The Haditha Marines were attacked while in convoy and pursuit of the insurgents terminated in a house that, unknowingly to the Marines, contained civilians.

An Honest Investigation Would Have Cleared Lieutenant Pantano in Iraq

Pantano's own story

Thanks Justa and Smooth!

BUMP for Ilario Pantano. When elected he deserves a seat on the Armed Services Committee!

"My life has been more dramatic and kinetic than any other candidate's."
That is a rather understatement. Heheh.

Ilario Pantano has a great story an all. But, he has also some questionable things. He is an unpaid deputy for the local sheriffs office. Well he claims he is paid, but sources on the inside say he isn’t.

If we run such a celebrity like Pantano we would surely lose. Breazeale has been the only candidate to run twice gaonst McIntyre and Breazeale can win this time!

Both, are military guys. Breazeale is for the fair tax and Pantano is a carpetbagger who claims to be a middle of the road republican. For all the anti RINO feelings here people seem to jump on this guys bandwagon quickly.

Also the guys drive a Prius which tells me all I need to know. Support Breazeale!

Breazeale lost while Obama was on the ticket. He received almost 40 percent of the vote. All other challengers to McIntyre before were in the 20’s. Run Pantano and McIntyre stays

Pantano isn’t really even living in NC these days, so he’s surely not on the sheriff’s payroll right now. He’s been commuting between Washington, DC and NC for the past 8 months while in school.

If he was a “page” he worked for the network, not Franken and being a page isn’t an entry level job into anything. Did you mean intern?

Breazeale got 31%, running slightly ahead of McIntyre’s prior opponents who couldn’t even break 30%. If he’d actually gotten 40% in that district last year then I’d re-nominate the guy in a heart beat...

2008
McIntyre 68.84% 215,383
Breazeale 31.16% 97,472
