SALT LAKE CITY The next Republican presidential nominee could be named in Utah.
After four months of study, the GOP has selected Salt Lake City as one of four finalists for the 2012 Republican National Convention, an event that could bring 30,000 people to the state for several days.
The other finalists will be announced early next week, and the winner will be selected in late summer after GOP officials visit each city.
If Salt Lake City gets the bid, the 2012 event would be the first GOP convention held in the Intermountain West. Denver hosted the Democratic National Convention in 2008.

The other cities were also notified on Friday but ONLY SLC saw fit to announce that they’re a finalist.
I don't think it's so much because he's not a conservative, I think it's because he has no charisma. He's talented (I dislike the way he bashed other candidates....and Bush) but nobody really likes the man. They don't dislike, they just can't like him and you don't get to be president if you are that way.
I know exactly what “it” was inferring. I’ve had those little bastards smearing me since I declared opposition to their idol almost 4 years ago. They can’t produce a single post to substantiate their libel of me, and yet they keep on with their filth. They and their little fellow groupies have threatened the operation of this website, and I’ve had enough of them to last a lifetime.
It also isn't a coincidence that the Moron running for office (governor or Senate, can't remember) in Utah is calling for gay marriage- echoing Romney's position on gay rights. The influence on Mormonism is unquestionable, and I find it hypocritical that the Mormons on FR are supporting Romney *just because he's a Mormon*. They are no different than the blacks who supported Obama, or fundies who support Huck.
It is nice to have a bean counter in the White House but we are also at war and this time we have been attacked on our soil with thousands killed and more promised by the enemy.
Mitt has shown an disinterence with America at war, first sitting out the Vietnam war, part of the time in Paris.
Having 5 sons who have never served in the military.
But he isn't.
I agree. I don’t think very many people like him at all, but at the same time, I think he would useful serving in the Treasury Dept. or something else far removed from the Whitehouse.
Romney is a fine money manager and businessman. He should be Sec. of the Treasury or Commerce Secretary. But nothing more.
disinterence = disinterest
I can agree with that.
I don’t think it is fair to hold lack of military service against anyone when there is no draft. I think some of his kids did a mission thing or something, which is not a selfish act regardless of religion. We have also had some well-liked conservative leaders who did not serve in the military when they probably could/should have. I think he might be a good bean counter, but not in the WH. I also don’t think that Rudi, Huckabee, or Pawlenty would be a good president either.
I’m out of it. Good to see you BTW and hope the weather didn’t hamper you much.
SLC = “Romney-Hatch 2012!”?
An experienced “Eastern Moderate” and a veteran “Western Conservative elder statesman”: How could that not be a winning combination?!?
In their dreams!
We got a bit over 4 inches here. There’s an upside to living off an emergency vehicle main route as you get priority to have your street cleared. The downside is that one of those clearing trucks may have demolished both my and my neighbor’s mailbox posts.
At the end of the day,
Mitt Romney is both antiGOP and a dedicated Democrat.
"Governor Mitt Romney, who touts his conservative credentials to out-of-state Republicans,
has passed over GOP lawyers for three-quarters of the 36 judicial vacancies he has faced,
instead tapping registered Democrats or independents -- including two gay lawyers who
have supported expanded same-sex rights, a Globe review of the nominations has found.
Of the 36 people Romney named to be judges or clerk magistrates, 23 are either registered Democrats
or unenrolled voters who have made multiple contributions to Democratic politicians
or who voted in Democratic primaries, state and local records show.
In all, he has nominated nine registered Republicans, 13 unenrolled voters,
and 14 registered Democrats."

Romney Rewards one of the State's Leading Anti-Marriage Attorneys by Making him a Judge
Romney told the U.S. Senate on June 22, 2004, that the "real threat to the States is not the
constitutional amendment process, in which the states participate,
but activist judges who disregard the law and redefine marriage . . ."
Romney sounds tough but yet he had no qualms advancing the legal career of one
of the leading anti-marriage attorneys. He nominated Stephen Abany to a District Court.
Abany has been a key player in the Massachusetts Lesbian and Gay Bar Association which,
in its own words, is "dedicated to ensuring that the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court decision
on marriage equality is upheld, and that any anti-gay amendment or legislation is defeated."

"Romney announces he won't fill judicial vacancies before term ends
Despite his rhetoric about judicial activism, Romney announced that
he won't fill all the remaining vacancies during his term - but instead
leave them for his liberal Democrat successor!
Governor Mitt Romney pledged yesterday not to make a flurry of lame-duck
judicial appointments in the final days of his administration . . . David Yas,
editor of Lawyers Weekly, said Romney is "bucking tradition" by resisting the urge to
fill all remaining judgeships. "It is a tradition for governors to use that power to appoint judges
aggressively in the waning moments of their administration," Yas said.
He added that Romney has been criticized for failing to make judicial appointments.
"The legal community has consistently criticized him for not filling open seats quickly enough
and being a little too painstaking in the process and being dismissive of the input of the
Judicial Nominating Commission," Yas said.

The Massachusetts Republican Party died last Tuesday.
The cause of death: failed leadership.
The party is survived by a few leftover legislators
and a handful of county officials and grassroots activists
who have been ignored for years.
Services will be public and a mass exodus of taxpayers will follow.
In lieu of flowers, send messages to Republican voters
warning them about a certain presidential candidate named Romney.
- Boston Herald, 11/12/2006
"In 2006, while Romney was chairman of the National Republican
Governors Association - a group dedicated to electing more
Republican governors - his own hand-picked Republican successor
as governor lost badly to the Democrat, despite the fact that Republicans
have held the governorship in Massachusetts since 1990. Romney largely
ignored the Massachusetts elections and spent most of the time
during the campaign out of state building his presidential campaign.
He came back and publicly campaigned for the Republican candidate
the day before the general election!
Locally, this is a rebuke to Mitt Romney and checking out within six months
after being elected and having accomplished almost nothing,
[Jim] Rappaport [former chairman of the state Republican Party]."

You are right, it has nothing to do with him being Mormon, it has to do with no charisma. He's like wallpaper. Good looking wallpaper, but flat and bland and unexciting. You can't be president in this country if you don't have that inexplicable something that draws people to you.
I had to move 2 families yesterday for a friend. It was a bear. Keep up the good fight. I actually made a funny or so I thought.
You moved 2 families ? What happened ?
McCain has two sons in the military. One is a Marine based here in San Diego who has served in Iraq.
Sarah Palin’s son recently returned from a year in Iraq.
When more than one America city was attacked and over 3 thousand people killed and more to come.
Huge numbers of Americans left good jobs and joined the military to fight this enemy. You don’t wait for a draft or not when we have been attacked.
I have several relatives serving in Iraq, Afghn, etc and some are returning shortly.
