Palin, McCain and Why Vote for J.D. Hayworth

In jpl's original thread, there was a great deal of discussion about Sarah Palin and her endorsement of John McCain in the Arizona Republican senatorial primary, where he is opposed by J.D. Hayworth. Many of us are disappointed in Sarah, who stated unequivocally that she would work to elect conservatives to public office and I communicated my disappointment to SarahPac directly. Some of us understood Sarah's loyalty to McCain for selecting her as his running mate and some of us (myself included) think he canceled that debt when he declined to support her as she was/is barbecued by the media in the aftermath of the '08 election. Others, however, suggested that, rather than argue about what Sarah has done, we offer reasons to vote for J.D. Hayworth, which made a great deal of sense to me.

I am from Arizona and conservatives there have been frustrated by the Republican Party's repeated endorsement and financial support of "moderate" incumbents over frequently more popular conservatives - usually to the detriment of the party and the people of Arizona and the United States. Moreover, while serving in the Army, I was stationed in Alaska for 3 1/2 years and gained a real appreciation for the "no apologies/no regrets" libertarian brand of conservatism that is so widespread in Alaska (although I don't share all aspects of that philosophy) and I have followed politics there for 30 years. What Sarah is doing in Arizona is the approximate equivalent of what the NRC did to her in her run for governor in Alaska. Therefore, I took it as my mission to document at least some of the reasons to vote for JD Hayworth, as opposed to voting for John McCain or throwing Sarah under the bus. I met JD long before he was elected to the US House. I like him and he is a real conservative, but most of you don't know me, so my opinion of him carries little weight.

I went to the web site of the American Conservative Union (ACU), which compiles voting records and produces conservative ratings for all members of the House and Senate based on their annual and lifetime voting records. Following are the annual and lifetime conservative ratings for John McCain and J.D. Hayworth for each of the 10 years in which JD Hayworth served in the House. How better to evaluate which is the conservative?

2006 - McCain 65%, Hayworth 96%; 2005 - McCain 80%, Hayworth 100%; 2004 - McCain 72%, Hayworth 96%; 2003 - McCain 80%, Hayworth 88%; 2002 - McCain 78%, Hayworth 100%; 2001 - McCain 68%, Hayworth 100%; 2000 - McCain 81%, Hayworth 100%; 1999 - McCain 77%, Hayworth 100%; 1998 - McCain 68%, Hayworth 100%; 1997 - McCain 80%, Hayworth 96%; Lifetime - McCain 82.3%, Hayworth 97.6%

But Sarah said McCain has changed his ways. Said (on Glenn Beck show FNC) he's not the same progressive he was when she ran with him back when she said he was a conservative in 2008. Could she be wrong??

Let's cut to the chase here. Sarah Palin is free to support anybody she wishes, be it in Arizona or BumF*k Egypt. She has a mind of her own, and uses it as she sees fit.

Now fer gawdsakes people, let's think about this for a minute. We have the epitome of a RINO by the name of John McCain who has spent decades stabbing all things conservative in the back, time after time after time. I don't have to give you a laundry list of the betrayals that conservatives have suffered at the hands of that sonuvabitch, you should know them by heart.

Now consider former Congressman J.D. Hayworth who is a conservative's conservative, his positions more closely mirror what FReepers stand for, what conservatives stand for, what the average American stands for, on the critical issues facing our Nation.

Consider one issue that is still unresolved more than a year after Comrade Zero oozed into the White House, the question of his eligibility, here is what J.D. Hayworth had to say about it:

"Well, gosh, we all had to bring our birth certificates to show we were who we said we were, and we were the age we said we were, to play football in youth sports ... shouldn't we know exactly that anyone who wants to run for public office is a natural born citizen of the United States, and is who they say they are? ... the president should come forward with the information, that's all. Why must we depend on the governor of Hawaii?"

And what is John McCain's most infamous quote about the Kenyan Usurper?

"We have nothing to fear from an 0bama Administration"

Even a casual comparison of McCain's liberal-progressive views with the more conservative views of J.D. Hayworth OUGHT to be enough to convince ANY person with a lick of common sense to pull the lever for Hayworth and retire that old goat McCain once for all. Why should ANYONE base their decision on who to vote for on the endorsement of Sarah Palin, or any other person? Are people so bloody mindless and brain dead that they need to be instructed like dumb mutts to "vote boy, vote, vote for McCain, GOOD boy!" ? God help us all if the majority of citizens have become so indifferent and ignorant that they are unable to make decicions without some celebrity or political icon telling them what to do.

To hell with whether or not Sarah Palin has endorsed John McCain or not, it doesn't make a damn bit of difference because a THINKING conservative ought to be comparing the positions of Hayworth vs McCain to reach their decision as to who they should cast their ballot for, not whether or not this person or that person 'endorsed' McCain. That endorsement plus a buck and some change might get you a cup o' coffee at your local Dunkin Donuts, no more and no less.

I daresay that if ANY FReeper were to walk up to Sarah Palin and ask "Governor, if we didn't know anything at all about John McCain, would you tell us to vote for him and just 'trust you'? Or would you tell us to study his positions, compare them with his opponent, and then make whatever we deem to be the correct choice?"

I believe she would tell anyone to do their own research and make their decision(s) accordingly. Every Palin supporter I know is (or claims to be) an independent thinker, so it stands to reason that such independent thinkers should look first to the differences between Hayworth and McCain, study the records of the two candidates, and then vote for whoever best represents the conservative values and beliefs that we hold dear in America and on Free Republic.

Forget who Sarah Palin endorses. Right now, she is a talking head on Fox News, and isn't even a candidate in this election cycle.

It's Hayworth vs McCain. Vote for the best conservative candidate.

I say that a good bit of what McCain does to conservatives is “intangible”; leading the gang of 14, lukewarm pro-family positions and CFR come in under the radar.

His "reaching across the isle" is seen as a good thing by his adoring media. Conservatives see it as more of a "reach around" than a "reach across".

In any event I don't vote for Republicans to go to DC to make friends with the Democrats. I want them to go to DC to make war with the Democrats.

Last night on the chrisy show, she asked JD about Sarah and Scott Brown backing mcpain.

JD responded by saying that since mcpain bought Sarah on the National stage, he understood the reason that she was backing mcpain.

JD said something about it not being mcpain's seat but AZ seat and the people of AZ would decide who would sit in it.

Palin has lost no credibility as a Conservative. Hayworth go thrown out of office.

Hayworth was gerrymandered out of office and his opponent in the revised district was a lying but popular former mayor of Tempe Arizona who managed to squeak by Hayworth by a margin of 8023 votes statewide. That hardly constitutes Hayworth being 'thrown out of office'.

Study the political history of the 5th district and see what really happened.

These Palin/McCain/Hayworth threads are good for clearing the air and getting opinions out in the open and venting anger.

They also show how unlikely it is that Conservatives will maintain political power should they ever acquire it. Idealists eat their own while pragmatists play season after season.

I thank McCain for losing to obama. It might be the best thing he has ever done for his country.

Agreed! Remember when he stated, “America has nothing to fear from an Obama presidency”?? It’s unreal how many times this man has kicked conservatives to the curb in his mad scramble to kiss up to the Dems and do their bidding in the guise of “reaching across the aisle”. Now that the conservatives matter again and it’s in “vogue” to remember your roots because it’s election year and the conservatives are roaring their disapproval, he comes crawling back. I heard Mark Levin advocate for Hayworth last night ~ good for him.

He made it sound like an up hill struggle. Things are very fluid right now and I think it is a good messafge to send to the GOP.

Good things are happening; Brown won, Rubio has pulled even with Christ and Joe Biden’s kid has dropped out of the race for US Senate.

Put a bullseye on the McCain campaign and let the money flow from outside AZ.

If she had a dollar for every time someone here in the last 6 months has demanded we give her ‘the benefit of the doubt’ she could balance the national budget! It’s past time for Sarah to speak up and remove ALL doubt.
