Time for George Mitchell to resign [Obama caves to Jewish lobby]
Walt Foreign Policy ^ | 1-25-10 | Stephen M. Walt

Posted on 01/25/2010 4:20:23 PM PST by SJackson

If Mideast special envoy George Mitchell wants to end his career with his reputation intact, it is time for him to resign. He had a distinguished tenure in the U.S. Senate -- including a stint as majority leader -- and his post-Senate career has been equally accomplished. He was an effective mediator of the conflict in Northern Ireland, helped shepherd the Disney Corporation through a turbulent period, and led an effective investigation of the steroids scandal afflicting major league baseball. Nobody can expect to be universally admired in the United States, but Mitchell may have come as close as any politician in recent memory.

Why should Mitchell step down now? Because he is wasting his time. The administration's early commitment to an Israeli-Palestinian peace was either a naïve bit of bravado or a cynical charade, and if Mitchell continues to pile up frequent-flyer miles in a fruitless effort, he will be remembered as one of a long series of U.S. "mediators" who ended up complicit in Israel's self-destructive land grab on the West Bank. Mitchell will turn 77 in August, he has already undergone treatment for prostate cancer, and he's gotten exactly nowhere (or worse) since his mission began. However noble the goal of Israeli-Palestinian peace might be, surely he's got better things to do.

Without Obama, and without the “universally admired” Mitchell. Both are irrelevant

No mistakes, no failures, no dumb ideas, no bias.... Everything that does not work out to Mr. Walt's liking is Jewish fault. I guess, Israel not committing a suicide has to be a guilty party...

Peace in the Miidle East, if it is ever to be, will come a lot faster if U.S. Presidents cease the charade that it can be negotiated by the United States or anyone outside of the parties directly involved.

One gets the impression that Stephen M. Walt -- a Realist in an Ideological Age (his words) -- is unhappy that Mitchell hasn't facilitated the Palestinian defeat of Israel -- and the accompanying slaughter of Jews.

...complete Israeli control is both a denial of the Palestinians' legitimate aspirations and a severe obstacle to their ability to fully develop their own society.

A telling quote...

SJ- Apparently we have worn out our welcome as a solution helper. We have become part of the problem not the solution. We should publicly cut all ties and let happen what may. Israel should protect its own interests in its own way as should we. Our interests are no longer the same.

Yep, a "palestinian" Cuba under the Communist PLO is just what the United States really needs. [/sarcasm]

As I recall, Mitchell wanted to be appointed to the Supreme Court in 1994 but Clinton wanted him to stay in the Senate to get health care passed--so he wound up with neither. He is considered an Arab-American--his mother was Lebanese and his father was of Irish descent but adopted by a Lebanese-American family. Lebanese Maronite Catholic, not Muslim.

Perhaps he wouldn't have been quite as bad as Breyer--plus he's 5 years older than Breyer.

It's not that Israel and America's interests are not the same. It is the "Messiah's" and America's interests that are not the same.

And that is a big big problem.

How can Mitchell claim to be universally admired? This is the man who bankrupted social security.
