Great Scott! (Thomas Sowell)
Jewish World Review ^ | January 26, 2010 | Thomas Sowell

Some of the most melancholy letters and e-mails that are sent to me are from people who lament that there is nothing they can do about the bad policies that they see ruining this country. They don't have any media outlet for their opinions and the letters they send to their Congressmen are either ignored or are answered by form letters with weasel words. They feel powerless.

Sometimes I remind them that the whole political establishment — both Democrats and Republicans, as well as the mainstream media — were behind amnesty for illegal immigrants, until the public opinion polls showed that the voters were not buying it. If politicians can't do anything else right, they can count votes.

It was the same story with the government's health care takeover legislation. The Democrats have such huge majorities in both houses of Congress that they could literally lock the Republicans out of the room where they were deciding what to do, set arbitrary deadlines for votes, and cut off debate in the Senate. The mainstream media was on board with this bill too. To hear the talking heads on TV, you would think it was a done deal.

Then Scott Brown got elected to the "Kennedy seat" in the Senate, showing that that seat was not the inheritance of any dynasty to pass on. Moreover, it showed that the voters were already fed up with the Obama administration, even in liberal Massachusetts, as well as in Virginia and New Jersey. The backtracking on health care began immediately. Politicians can count votes. Once again, the public was not helpless.

One seat did not deprive the Democrats of big majorities in Congress. But one seat was the difference between being able to shut off debate in the Senate and having to allow debate...

You surely don’t think Dr. Sowell was not aware of that with him being a conservative do you? :-)

I think it’s safe to say most everyone here knew Scott Brown’s stance on abortion as they know what a disaster it will be should either obamacare bill be passed.

I’d rather see Dr. Williams as Media Czar, with a mandate to make fun of reporters whenever they say something foolish. He would be a very busy man.

lets not forget Mr Steele and the RNC ROYALLY BOTCHED the NY state race.

The RNC could not grasp the center of america if there were standing smack dab in the middle of it. (see John clueless McCain)

Okay, Sowell is not really a “brillian” man, but he is a brilliant man.

Yes, alas.

He was my choice, I think he would have done a fine job and been a stable presence.

People just didn’t want him. I know the primary process is screwed up, and gave us McCain, but...Sigh.

Thomas Sowell is a true scientist. He reasons well and considers the evidence. If reason and evidence collide, reason gives way.

He is a prolific writer, having authored numerous books in addition to his columns. He has developed judgment that we can depend upon; he is a wise man. If any social scientist deserves a Nobel prize, it is Thomas Sowell. But like Ludwig von Mises, he is to too conservative to receive a prize from the Nobel committee.

I lived in the belly of the beast (Newton, MA) for 22 years. The number of people that don't vote, because "there's nothing you can do that will make a difference" is enormous.

We live in the Maryland Beast. Always felt the same way. Now I see that there is always hope and change for the good is possible.

Once again I believe God has not abandoned America....but this was so close I admit I was almost despondent.

I wonder if Thomas Sowell has figured out that Scott Brown, despite running a good campaign in MA, is really a pro-abort???

Yes, I wonder myself. Are the Republicans/Catholics/Christians and pro-lifers that are happy that Ted's blue seat was taken over by a red one, blind to the colors of a freshly aborted baby? Scott Brown supports child-killing, and does so under the guise of being a cool, truck-driving, solid family "Republic-man." Yes, he can be converted, and "educated" as Judie Brown has said, if we exchange praise for prayer, and do so intently, and isn't that where the focus of a "true" pro-lifer should be?

St. Michael, the Archangel, pray for *all* politicians that carry a pro-abort stance, both here and abroad.

Scott Brown On The Issues.
